Neurosurgeon at Boulder Neurosurgical & Spine Associates

Meet Dr. Alan Villavicencio

Dr. Villavicencio is a board certified, fellowship trained spine surgeon with Boulder Neurosurgical & Spine Associates.

Utilizing his extensive educational and clinical experience, Dr. Villavicencio specializes his practice in minimally invasive surgery and complex spinal reconstruction surgery, including treatment of scoliosis and other types of spinal deformity and brain disorders.

Dr. Villavicencio is one of only a few surgeons in the nation that is trained in both neurosurgery and orthopedic spine surgery, therefore giving his patients some of the most advanced care possible in the world. While he may be an expert in surgical procedures of the spine, Dr. Villavicencio works to advance the field in developing surgical and non-surgical treatment options to help patients return to a pain-free and functional life.

Doctor Quote

By its very nature, neurosurgery is challenging. The challenges are what drew me to the specialty, in part. The other reason is that these patients need resolution. Often that resolution is relief from longstanding suffering. In many cases, a life is in the balance. For me, caring for these patients is the very essence of medicine, and it has fueled my pursuit of excellence. Today, I’m a lead investigator in several studies. I’m one of a handful of spine surgeons in the U.S. with training in both neurological surgery and orthopedic spine surgery. I perform outpatient procedures that others are still performing as several-open surgeries with several days of hospitalization. My colleagues and I provide neurosurgical care that is as good or better than anywhere else in the world. But the reason I do these things is because I’ll stop at nothing to help these people get their lives back.

What Patients are Saying About Dr. Alan Villavicencio

  • It has been six months since Dr. Villavicencio performed my lumbar and neck surgery. The change in my life has been dramatic. I am pain free and regaining strength and mobility. I am doing things, like touch the ground that I haven't been able to do for years. I am no longer making decisions based on falling risk. I am constantly being stopped by friends who are amazed at how much younger, taller (apparently I was hunching a lot with the pain) and the sparkle I have in my eye. I would have been thrilled with just a portion of the improvement the surgery has made in my life. The surgery Dr. Villavicencio and his staff performed have literally changed my life. I cannot recommend having this treatment enough!

  • I have had the misfortune of requiring 2 back surgeries but the unbelievably good fortune to have had Dr. Villavicencio perform both those surgeries. Both were complete successes. In November 2010 my L3, L4 & L5 were fused to correct herniated discs, stenosis, arthritis and a congenitally narrow canal. On August 7, 2015 I had an L5/S1 micro discectomy due to bulging discs. In both instances I could barely walk prior to surgery and in both instances I fully recovered and was able to resume all my athletic pursuits without limitation. Dr. Villavicencio truly gave me my life back. Dr. Villavicencio's superior medical skills are unquestioned. He is the best at what he does. But what he did to help me heal goes beyond medical skills and I am forever grateful. Let me explain. In June and July of 2015 I had 2 epidurals to hopefully control the bulging discs. It didn't work. Sometime toward the end of July I called Dr. Villavicencio's office to make an appointment and casually mentioned that I thought I was probably going to need surgery again. I was told he was booked until I think it was early October. Gulp!!!! Dr. Villavicencio saw me on August 4, saw how bad I was, and operated on me on Friday, August 7. Fridays are always his day off and a long bike ride day but he came in to operate on me. What more can I say.
