Cyber Hugs: How Online Support Groups Help with Chronic Pain

Back Pain Support GroupsIf you're dealing with chronic pain, you probably already know what a devastatingly lonely experience it can be. Even with the most supportive family and friends, you still feel alone, because they don't know – they can't know – what it's like to endure chronic pain each and every day of your life. And just so sick and tired of explaining yourself and having it affect all the most important relationships in your life.

This is where online support groups come in – an online discussion forum where people with the same kinds of pain are dealing with the same things your are. These groups provide you with a circle of friendship, support and camaraderie to help you through the worst and celebrate the good times as well. These people won't tell you its all in your head, they won't keep asking if you think you feel better yet, and they won't mind when you just need to vent.

Contrary to how many people view online chronic pain support forums, the people in these groups are not whiners and attention seekers. At least on Spine-health.com's back pain forums and chat rooms – we find people are almost universally constructive, supportive and at times downright hilarious.

So what are the main benefits of an participating in an online support community?

  • They validate your feelings – no, you're not crazy or imagining it!
  • They give you hope even in your deepest times of need
  • They spur you on to keep coping and looking for pain relief even after you're exhausted and want to give up
  • They help you with daily living problems. Should I get a shower seat? How do you arrange the pillows at night to get back support? What are recipes that are easy to prepare and nutritious?
  • They are available day or night. Up with intense pain at 2:00 am and feeling all alone? Log on and you'll have company – your online friends can help you get through the night.
  • And sometimes best of all, you get the satisfaction of helping others. You can reach out to others when they post questions, need an emotional lift, or just need to talk.

A good pain management program and other approaches can hopefully help you from a medical perspective. And if you're really depressed, take care to get help from a professional right away. (You can use this Symptoms of Depression checklist as a guide to see if you - or someone you care about - needs help.) And by all means don't forget to take good care of your emotional, spiritual and psychological health too by finding a good support group. You may have to visit a number of discussion boards and chat rooms to find one that suits you best, but I guarantee you it will be well worth it. If you prefer to meet in person, contact your local hospital or your pain management physician and they should be able to give you a list of local chronic pain support groups in your area.

You will be amazed at how many people suffer from the same pain and related challenges as you do, and how refreshing it is to meet others in such similar situations. Cyber hugs to all!

SPINALCORD SURGERY

Dear Readers ,
It is unfortunate I develpoed a symtom of burning sensation and numbness in right toe which progressed up to lower back, and then it started with left toe and progressed to top. I started falling down without notice ,bladder started losing its function . Several physician consultations had not given any clue . Finally an MRI SCAN revealed growth of a tumour in spinsl cord . An emergency operation saved me , otherwise I would have lost both upper limbs too functionally . Now I donot have any power in legs . It is ok . I am using a walker and managing . But most horrifying thing is continuous buning sensation in both legs, and lower back which is frustrating to me . Neurophysicians as well as surgeons are suggesting that I have to live with the problem as tumour had damaged some nerves . Many times I have to scream with burning pain in legs ! This suffering is since 1996 . I am 64 yrs old now . I am not using medical terminology . I suggest any one if they develop symptoms of numbness , loss os sensation , burning sensation , sudden weakness in limbs , realing sensation, sudden loss of vision hearing or touch sensation must consult a neurophysician, also, in addition to general physician ! . This is my friendly advice to any one who comes across this message providentially! Please feel free to mail me on my mail id turbine.kk@gmail.com

My mother is in constant pain and it's been going on for about four months now. She has trouble sleeping, getting up from a sitting position, walking, and gasps in pain all the time. She is like this all day, every day, for four, almost five months in a row now. She complains of a sharp pain begging at the small of her back and running the length of her leg. She can barely move at this point. Should she go see her family doctor or skip the extra expense of that and just go to a physical therapist or chiropracter? Please give me some kind of information about this problem for her. I can't stand to see her in so much pain constantly. Please help.

My Dear Amanda Sliqar,
I happened to see your message of 12/1/2007 to day . I think it is too late for me to respond . Hope by Gods Grace you have found a relief to your mother.
As Spine Health .com showng REPLY I felt writing down my idaes , please bear with me .
1)A consultation with neurophysician will give relief .
2) If not available orthopaedic surgeon can also help .
3) It is always better to get clinicaly evaluated when problem is at initial stages .
4) Once they donot offer satisfying solution alternative therapies can be looked in to .
5) It is my unfortunate experience that I did not follow advice of neurophysician and surgeon and delayed surgery ,I lost my both lower limbs, and bladder functionally . For life I am now a physically challenged person .My case can be offerd for a Phd or medical book publishing, as it can help thousands of medical students , doctors , and patients!!!
6) If You are in India and need my help please donot hesitate to contact me on mail id turbine.kk@gmail.com .Please inform me about improvemet.

They have also gone to the extent to call CAS on me saying I'm not ok to raise my kids I guess. I am so angry, my children ALL FOUR OF THEM, are my all I live and breath in order to do the job I was put on this earth to do, to love, care, nurture, and disipline with love and that just exactly what I do every second of every day. Man it's hard to type properly and cry at the same time. Thanks for your ear I think I needed to let that out somehow.

tamara i dont have any experience with spinal stenosis but i do suffer from back pain everyday of my life and the only thing i can say is if you are thinking about surgery make sure you get all the facts first because it's not always the answer.I had major back surgery in 2003 and they told me that i would not be in any pain after i was done with the healing from the surgery and let me tell you they were very wrong. If a doctor says they can fix the problem with surgery don't just go on what they say go get a second and 3rd opinion because you can never be to careful once you have surgery there is no going back so please be careful and get as much information as you can and i wish you the best of luck.

I was in a car accident and had a bad whip last in Nov 05. Because of that accident my 5th disk torn in several places. I was in horrible pain from my lower back and right side sciatic all the way down the right leg. I had a cortisone injection last June 06 and before that I took cortisone orally. I had a bad allergic reaction to the cortisone so I can't have those injections. Those injections were a life saver. Then I had a pulsed radio-frequency procedure that stuns the nerve and calms down the firing messages to my brain that I'm in PAIN. That has made my sciatic pain decrease to almost nothing!! I would recommend anyone for both procedures if it's appropriate. Now my nerve is being compressed and I have spinal stenosis. Does anyone have the same experience and have had procedures, surgery or alternative actions that have relieved the pain so that I could continue to do basic excercise and house work?? Thanks Good luck to all of you that suffer from back pain...it's a challenge but keep pushing to get well. tamara
