Pain and Tingling in elbow, arms and hand

LOL. Those emotes are kinda comical you can choose from to post a message.

Anyway, I woke up this morning with tingling in my left elbow, arm and especially my hand as if I'd slept on it. It is not as bad right now as when I woke up but persistent.

From what I could figure in articles on this site pinched nerves in my cervical spine, impinged on nerves, etc. can cause this. It is definitly annoying. It makes me look forward to my surgery. LOL.

Anyone else have these kind of symptoms pre-surgery?

My MRI said I have nerve displacement, pinched nerves, bulging discs c3 to c7. My spine doctor said my surgery would be major with new hardware put in.

Thanks much! You guys are great!

  • First of all good luck. i am not presurgery for cervical stuff but am post surgery from lumbar. I have developed tingling in my feet and left leg. Now I have a waves of vibrations in my left foot. Did that happen to you? I have my MRI with contrast . I hate needles. I had a cortisone shot in my elbow yesterday to calm it down. When did your symptoms start? When is your surgery? Are you seeing an ortho or neuro?
  • It happens off and on all day. I have carpal tunnel syndrome in addition to cervical issues and they compound each other. Sometimes I can move the position of my arm and it goes away. Sometimes I move my head (thus neck) and it goes away. It just started getting worse the past week after being gone for months.
  • Thanks for your comments! I had carpal tunnel surgery on both of my hands about 12 yrs ago. I have not had that problem since. My spine doctor (DO) did nerve conduction tests and said there was mild carpal tunnel there again. Its not enough I notice anything.

The nerve conduction tests are what I think made her start looking at my neck as the source of my problems this time.

I am seeing a Neuro Surgeon on July 21. I don't know the date of my surgery yet. I heard if I have anyone doing surgery on my neck this is the guy to do it. I'm told his bedside manner is zilch, none there. That's ok with me. I'd rather have someone who is top notch doing the surgery anyway.

  • Hi GreyEagle,

I had a lot of arm and hand symptoms and then leg and foot ones....it just never ended. Post op I'm still having them but they can take a long time to get better. After my first surgery I had a pain in my right arm on about day 5. By a week it was so bad that I couldn't use my arm. I ended up losing my entire tricep muscle and most of my bicep. My chest muscles followed. This was a severe case and involved my spinal cord as well as nerve roots so don't panic just yet LOL

You may need to find a different sleeping position if you find that you wake up in worse shape. I slept on the couch for months- it kept me from moving around- and it helped a bit.

    Good luck,

    Griff

sound almost identical to mine. In August of '07 I had a corpectomy, discectomy, multi-level fusion with hardware from C3 thru C6. The surgery
was successful but my nerve damage may be permanent which is not an issue
    for me.
Your surgeon's manners sounds like my surgeon's also but he did an awesome job on my back the previous year and he was highly recommended
so that's what matters to me. I want someone who is confident and knows
    that they are good.
Take care and keep us posted,

  • Wow, Griff. I am sorry to hear you had sooo much trouble with your pain! So far mine is limited pretty much to my arms and hands. My shoulders and neck as well at times.

I hadn't thought of limited movement post-op giving trouble sleeping in my own bed. The couch would be a good idea except in my case we have a 'zoo' in our house, lol.

    :)

  • hi Greyeagle, does it feel like sciatica running down your arm to your hand? mine feels like that, and get the pins needles wrist aches, hand aches, finger poke type pains,it runs down the back of my arm,on the inside to the elbow, and down to the muscles below. Sorry for your pain there, all i know mine is from scar tissue and multiple neck injuries, blown rotator cuff,fascietis,uhh..wait sorry... i hope your surgery helps you and lets ya get pain free!

Dang griff, thats a lot of injury to carry mama!
  • Hi Ranchhand:

Most of the time it is more localized to my left elbow especially and my hands and fingers. Sometimes it does run down my arm like sciatica. Sometimes its extreme tingling in my hands sometimes its not.

I don't totally understand it all. I see the surgeon this coming Monday. I know my DO said that this surgeon will not even schedule an appt with someone until he has seen the MRI and DO report and has decided the patient is genuinely a surgery candidate.

From what my DO told me I can look forward to major neck surgery with hardware put in. Fun Summer! lol.

  • Hi,
This morning I woke up in normal fashion which is my hands and feet swelled, sore and stiff. The right side of my body has always been worse than the left. Anyway, while at work today I get this really strange pins and needles feeling, with the tingling and numbness that goes from my right elbow down the outside of my arm, hand and into my pinky finger! It's been here for almost 2 hrs now and no change only I noticed that the same areas feel cooler than the rest of my arm to pinky. What can be causing this? I have DDD, DJD and RA and both my lower back and neck have constant pain but also includes the neck down to the area right past your shoulder blades. So I only have a small section of my back that isnt in constant pain. Do you think I may have blown a disk in my upper back or neck to cause this? Any ideas or suggestions are really appreciated here!

    Thanks,

  • grey Eagle,, i too i have finally seen my NS, for the first time. I found out that he will not see anyone without MRI's . he is making me try some PT for 4 wks. to see if i am truly a surgery candidate. he said at end of 4 wks., if i am still bothered, and hurting. to call him up and he will do surgery. (ACDF). i think he is a very conservative dr., doesn't want to put thru something at first chance. so i am willing to start PT on Mon. i have the same symptoms as you, and ranchhand. off and on arm, shoulder, fingers , numb, shooters in my side of my ribs lately. , boy does that go through YA!! takes my breath away sometimes. my neck and up the back of my head and skull are there constantly. constant HEADACHES, every day. i do have an appt. back with him on sept. 4th. but also with my OS for my rotary cuff tear this wk. cannot lay on my left side too well. as the pain shoots thru me. good luck on your DR.'s appt. also. thanks

  • Hi,
I have just been told that I have a herniated disc in my c-spine; the pain, tingling, hot and cold and some numbness is driving me crazy. Please tell me that my physiotherapist can fix this and that I don't have to have surgery. It has been so debilitating for me as I am a fitness instructor and a fitness fanatic and I cannot do anything without pain, not even walking. Traction is helping, along with wearing a sling to take some of the pressure off my neck from my left arm hanging down.
  • I woke up six weeks ago feeling like shoulder out of place. After caring for 14 month gdaugher all afternoon, pain ensued. Next morning woke with bad pain, stabbing pains from should to elbow. I tried to see MD, couldn't get appt. Went to Chiro, he put shoulder blade back in place - little help. after 2 weeks got cortizone shot in shoulder helped 4-5 days. after 3 weeks of complaining to md, had xray- nothing shown. MD said likely arthritis. Pain worsens with tingling and numbness added. 2 weeks later MD order MRI - shows partial articular tear to cuff and tendon. 1 week later appt made for 8/27 with OrthSurgeon. Note: had bone spur removed from same shoulder 5 yrs ago.
Can I be sure tingling and numbness is from shoulder? I have two bad disc in my neck also.

Pain constant, in spite of pain meds I take regularly for sciatica... Suggestions?

Also have had chronic sciatica for 8 years, ddd L3,4,5. arthritis in knees and feet and recently went off all nsaids due to ulcers.
  • I also suffer from carpal tunnel syndrom in both hands.Right side worse than left. Some nights they feel so bad that I can't sleep. The tinglig in my fingers and the palm of my hands.I'm wondering if I have the surgery will it help, because I no of some people that had it done and it didm't help.
