Stabilization Training Definition

Stabilization training is an active form of physical therapy designed to strengthen muscles to support the spine and help prevent lower back pain. Through a regimen of exercises prescribed by a physical therapist, the patient is trained to find and maintain his/her "neutral spine" position. The back muscles are then exercised to teach the spine how to stay in this position. Stabilization training utilizes strengthening exercises as well as stretching and aerobic conditioning to rehabilitate the back. Stabilization training programs are individually designed for each patient based on the patient's condition.
