    Mesfin A. Lemma, MD has been recognized as “one of the Top 100 Spine Surgeons in America". He serves as Division Chief of Johns Hopkins Orthopaedic and Spine Surgery at Good Samaritan Hospital and is Co-Director of Spine Surgery. He is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Johns Hopkins University.

    A native of New York, Dr. Lemma completed his undergraduate degree in mechanical and aerospace engineering from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. He later went to Case Western’s School of Medicine, where he was elected into the AOA Medical Honor Society. Orthopedic surgery served as a perfect match for his medical and engineering background.

    He completed his orthopedic surgery residency at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. Dr. Lemma concluded his training with a prestigious spinal reconstructive fellowship at Hopkins, under the guidance of world-renowned John Kostuik, M.D.

    Dr. Lemma joined the Johns Hopkins Division at Good Samaritan in 2003 as the group’s first spinal reconstructive surgeon and became Division Chief in 2009. He has published several book chapters and peer-reviewed articles. He continues to be active in resident and physician education.

    His clinical interests include the treatment of a wide range of spine pathologies using techniques ranging from minimally invasive spine surgery to complex spine reconstruction. His research efforts focus predominantly in spinal deformity and spinal problems in the elderly.
