Why You Should Consider Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery for Your Back Pain

Minimally invasive surgery is an established, reliable alternative method of treatment for many types of spinal disorders. It involves surgical treatment of the spine through small incisions, allowing for minimal disruption of the surrounding muscle tissue.

The benefits of minimally invasive spine surgery include decreased pain, shorter hospital stay and a quicker recovery. In many cases these surgeries can be done through a one inch or less incision on an outpatient basis.

There are a number of different types of Minimally Invasive Surgical procedures available. Here are a just a few to highlight:

Laser Spine Surgery – While not all spinal conditions can be treated with a laser, lasers are one of the specialized tools that can be used during portions of minimally invasive spine surgery. The laser is a focused beam of light used for cutting soft tissue and is placed into the surgical field with a small incision and special retractors.

Endoscopic Spine Surgery – An endoscope is a very thin fiber-optic video camera (approximately the diameter of a pencil) that is inserted into the body through a small incision and is used to see the internal portions of the body. Surgery is performed by passing instruments through the endoscope to remove disc material, remove bone spurs or mend tissue. Endoscopic Spine Surgery is not used for every type of spine procedure, but it is a helpful tool for the surgeon to be able to see a portion of the spine without opening up the site.
