I started having back pain about a week ago. My pain started in my lower back, then went to my hip, and right leg. The more pressure I put on my right leg the worse my pain gets. some times I cant even stand for more than a few minutes. I had some xrays taken today, and the dr couldnt find any thing wrong with me. Is there anyone that has had this problem?

  • Welcome to Spine Health :H I had the same symptoms as you and was diagnosed with disc herniations in my lumber spine. This cannot be seen on an x-ray and that is why having an MRI is indicated. My problems were found after having an MRI done and I strongly believe your doctor should order one especially if you're having nerve pain radiating down your leg. Does it feel like you have burning, numbness, tingling, electric, or pins & needles sensations down your leg? Does that pain go down past your knee and do you feel worse when you sit? Does it feel better when you lie down? Were you asked any of those questions during the exam?

I'm not a doctor so I can't tell you what is wrong with you, and I'm writing this based on what I experienced. The exact cause of back pain can be difficult to pinpoint, so it is crucial that they order the right tests to determine what is going on. Take care and I hope you feel better soon.
  • I also had the same thing happen and the xray didn't show anything. I eventually had an MRI and found I had a bulging disc at L5/S1.

You should see if you can get a referral for MRI as it shows more than an xray. Some insurances require you do PT before they will approve mri. It all depends on what insurance company you have.

I wish you the best of luck and please keep us posted.
  • That sounds crazy to me.What if there were an injury or some type of bone disease/illness? Geez-these ins. & HMO's are whacked!

    I'm in a mood today too...lol.
  • I know of some people who were told they need to do PT before MRI and the doctor and patient appealed it stating they need to find out the cause of the problem before starting PT for fear that PT may make their condition worse. I don't understand what the insurance companies are thinking sometimes.

My insurance won't approve an function test until my primary doc gives them copies of my whole file to prove I had a condition and what was done. It's ridiculous.
  • sorry to hear about such crappy insurance. for me i need no approval or referral, wnet to ortho on my own no referral, oicked my own guy and he sent me for mri after x-rays and no out of pocket for mri. i agrree with u guys pt with out knowing whats wrong. what the heeckk!!
  • I had a company that took forever to approve an MRI for me when I originally hurt my back. 7 weeks went by, and by then I was thoroughly pissed and sick of being in agonizing pain without a diagnosis. I self referred my self to a specialist and got my MRI done the day after the consult. Voila! It was 2 herniated discs. I #$*@ing fired them and kicked the company to the curb. I make it my personal duty to warn people not to sign up with this insurance.
  • I too have been denied a MRI of my lumbar spine. I had one in Feb 2007 (I think) and last fall experienced a great deal of lower back pain, and leg pain when standing or walking. Insurance company denied, I appealed, they denied again. Said I hadn't tried conservative measures first ie PT. My PCP and I both shook our heads, but I did 24 sessions of PT, with no improvment. Now I've had to change insurance, and would have to pay half of the cost. Being a widow, that's hard to come up with. Insurance Companys don't care about us, they just want our money. Now I'm just drugging myself at night after work, to get thru the work week. Just wanted to include my rant on insurance! I know no one can help me.
