I am a little upset!!!

I understand this is more for surgery quest. but this is sort of related and there seems to be a lot more activity in this section.

Reason I am upset after my Epidural, I started to look at side effects about 48 hrs after injection because I was not feeling the best. I noticed possible side effects include insomnia, ulcers. I just talked to my Dr. and they new I had history of Ulcers, they even mention it in my file. Since Monday I have horrible indegestion, and I know it is a flare up, only because I have had many of them I just know the symptoms. I thought this was Bull and I should have been told.
2. Dr.'s office said to me not to worry about pain not going away on thursday, that a individual like me who has stayed on top of the Back Pain and not let linger should have a lot less pain in coming days. Wrong, Pain is actually worse.
So Know they say if injection doesn't take they will then go to a nerve conduction or the EMG (?) test. Well I have had fusion on L4/5 already isn't it to late for that test, and if you have had one 1. what happens if it comes back positive. 2. what happens if it reveals nothing?

Lastly if I can choose should I just see a neurosurgeon.
Maybe I will just live with it, I think I am at a point anymore I really dont know how to feel without the multitude of things that come with back injuries. I wish Dr.'s were more educated on facts about exercise and reducing pain as well with Foods to reduce Inflamation in the body naturally. How some foods increase it and others help to decrease it a more natural approach, it may take longer then quick fix surgeries but at least it is in the long run easier on the body.

  • sorry you are having so much trouble. i understand the frustration you are going through. and i can relate to what you went through with epidural. i had many questions before a shot and called for info upfront but nobody called back.based on that i canceled appointment. i later found out their schedule was usually so full they had no time to call people. youre right they should have warned you up front.
regarding question two...i am no expert on epidurals as they never worked for me. i am not familiar with complications so you need to get back to the dr. incharge and find some answers. dont hold back. youre the patient. you have a right for truthful answers.
with emg test i guess they just want to find out what nerve damage is envolved. i wouldnt think it matters whether or not youve had surgery.
should you see a spinal surgeon? my answer is yes. either a neuro surgeon who specializes on the spine or a orthopedic spinal surgeon. in fact i would get two opinions. one from a neuro and another fromorthopedic. i would rather they b in the drivers seat as apposed to the pain mgt. dr or whoever youre seeing now. they would have much more training and could give you more educated opinions.
lastly it would be good if drs understood nutrician more. but it doesnt seem to be stressed in their training.
this web site gives info on conservative approaches to reducing pain. while pursuing the surgeon you should search for info on other approaches. i got relief by stretching. but many have had luck with physical therapy, swimming. massage, accupuncture and yoga. sometimes diet alone has helped.
by the way what kind of dr. is guiding your treatment now? also where and how severe is your pain?
  • I have a couple questions for you. Who did your fusion -- neuro or ortho spinal specialist? How long ago was it? Who gave you the ESI? Where is your pain located now? More in back or in leg/legs? Were you ever pain-free after the fusion?

An EMG might be suggested at this point to see if you have new nerve damage. It may be that there is damage at a different level from where you had the fusion.
  • Adam,

When I was sked for an ESI I searched and searched for information on the net and found some great info. Google the "Burton Report" and you will find some very informative info regarding ESI's. I don't think I would ever get one - that said, I do know of many people who have benefited significantly from them. All the best, Mike
  • It was a neurosurgeon, I have to say I have nothing against what he did, I totally trust him. It was done in 4/08, ESI was done by Pain Specialist, but problem is in the area I am I just dont think they have goo quality Dr.'s and very very few to see. I was Limited to pretty much this 1 dr.

I was Pain free sporatic, but there is that deep down feeling I think we all no it and you just feel something, I tried to be positive not thinking to much about it and the longer out it was I did feel a little better. The pain started about 9 months post. Pain is in leg Rt. tows burn, back burning tight feeling and very unstable feeling.. If I watch baseball or golf, when they swing it hurts me. And I played Baseball through college, I think thats why in a sense because I can really feel and imagine the torque.
  • When I had the Epis there was more pain a few days after and then it eased up after a couple of weeks. Mostly for the leg and foot pain relief. After 5 esis I have less burning and pain. I started cymbalta which has helped the sciatica as well as lyrica 150mg day. I got a 2nd opinion PM Dr. and glad I did. The 1st Dr was all about injections but the 2nd used meds more so. I hope the side effects are only temporary for you. Take care and hope you feel better. Charry

  • Thank you for the Info I will be looking at it. I am done myself with them side effect are not worth it, at least with Back Pain it usually is the only thing you have to fight. I am know not able to eat due to indegestion, and I am so tired with not sleeping at night. All this just makes the stress and back pain worse.
  • thanks for your reply, right know I am seeing a Pain Dr. but I also see a General Back Dr. I think he will be refering me to Neurosurgeon. My pain very similar to what I had in the past before my surgery, but it is or seems lower, and it seems to really be affecting my rt leg strength and more into the foot. I just know it is a freight train that turns into a bullet train. Comes on slow and then hits me hard and fast. No particular reason or times sitting standing lying down standing on my head, back flips. I think like all of us no rhyme or reason.
It goes into my real dilemma getting a Job, that I will talk about later.
