Hi, I have sitting pain, like being on a lump and pulls down hamstrings and burns a bit. No diagnosis in spite of many tests. It is thought there is neuropathic as well as mechanical pain now because this has gone on so long. Have seen pain management doc 4 weeks ago and prescribed lyrica at 150mg which is like having smarties. My question is does Lyrica always work at this sort of dose if its going to or does it not kick in sometimes till you hit a higher dose? If there is a mix of nociceptive and neuropathic pain is there an opiate that is suitable for this? Am just curious as am not seeing pain doc again till January and am kind of preparing myself for next appointment. Many thanks

  • They usually start a low dose then they increase it slowly. Some have found relief with Lyrica but all I got was weight gain which I have now lost the 35lbs. I gained on it. I've found Cymbalta works for my leg pain and numbness better. I also had some relief with wrapping my legs and foot in an elastoplast bandage and heat helps also for me but that's just my experience. Also without my other meds, see below, I wouldn't be able to take the pain and numbness. I hope they can find a diagnosis for you. Have you had an MRI I guess? I hope you find some relief soon. Take care. Charry

  • What is a posture pump?
  • One of the things that sets Lyrica apart from its little brother, Neurontin, is that less medicine is needed to reach the same effect...therefore it is not as hard on the liver. Beyond a certain point, most people do not get better relief, better pain control, etc. The optimal dosage for most people is 225-300 mg per day...but different doctors prescribe varying amounts. If you read the prescribing information with the drug, nerve pain caused by spinal issues is not one of the approved uses for the drug, so it does not specifically list a maximum dosage. For fibromyalgia, the maximum dosage per day is 450 mg, broken into two or three dosages each day. The patient starts at 150 mg and can go up to 300 mg by the end of the first week.

By the way, Lyrica does not work for some people. I get very little pain relief from it, and I have taken it for six months on two different occasions.

Opioids have little effect on nerve pain.

Have you seen a spinal specialist regarding this problem? You mention "Like being on a lump." Maybe you could define this so we better understand your pain.

Hope you can find some answers soon.
  • I bought a posture pump it's like a little traction machine for when I had my herniated disc. The herniation is gone now and maybe the posture pump helped? I'm not sure but it was a little expensive but I got a free neck posture pump also because I have cervical issues also. Charry

  • Howdy and welcome to Spine Health!!! :-)

I have been on Lyrica for just over a month, and except for the weight gain, I LOVE it! I was started at 300mg's (150mg 2x a day) right out of the box. I also had a LOT of pain that was just starting to take over my life again - never mind my lack of sleep!

Like Gwennie said, if you read the information sheet that comes with it, nerves issues are listed, but not resulting from spine issues. After about the 3rd or 4th day I was in "comfortable" heaven! It allowed me to function again. I was light headed the first couple of days when I would take it, but now I don't notice any of that. Like was said by other members, it is a funny drug in that it either works for you or doesn't. Give it a week or so and see if that helps. Take care.
