Has anyone else been 4 days PLUS simply unable to walk due to Sciatica?

I am hobbling on crutches and experiencing searing pain the moment any weight is placed on my left foot.... can someone please reassure me that this will pass - sleeping, showering, using the restroom are all almost impossible....

Regards,

Tom

  • Sorry to hear! Did you injure your back recently? I had sciatica from my back condition recently herniated disc and now Degenerative discs. I hope your Dr. has done all the tests trying to find the reason and under some kind of pain meds and anti-inflammatories? Put ice for 20 minutes at least 4x daily if this is a new injury and heat is soothing also. Take care and hope you get over this sciatica soon.

My Dr. sent me for a nerve test EMG when the sciatica didn't go away for me and saw the Neurologist because of my weak leg and foot. I hope it eases up for you soon. Take care. Charry

  • Some times when my pelvis rotates my sciatica hurt so bad that it hurts to walk
    :?
  • My pain was like that in the beginning. Is yours a new injury? The first week was the worst but for me it was about 6 weeks before I could walk without excruciating pain. The washroom is directly across from my bedroom but it was a huge ordeal to get out of bed and go there... showering was downright scary. This intense pain should die down though over the next few days or week. Are you getting any treatment, pain meds, PT?

Will get better. Question is how to get through the next few days or week or 2. The responses above will help guide you. You need professional help for your diagnosis and treatment and probably some prescription medications. No lifting for now! Don't go over the recommended doses of your over the counter analgesics. Always take the NSAIDS like Aleve, with food. Eat more bran and take a stool softener or Miralax (over the counter) since you could get constipated. Ask your doctor for a TENS unit (applies a small current to block pain). There is a lot of help for this but the pain is there for a reason. You still have to fight it but do it the smart way.
  • i wished i had answers for you. Waiting on my pain to go away. Few months now. if not more. But has eased up some. Best of luck,. Id say see a dr if you have insurance. There are some videos on this site that can give you some answers..
  • I had bad pain in my left heel before & even though I have sciatica this turned out to be gout.
It was so painful that I couldn't walk or even touch it to a bed sheet cause that would set it off. Even a bit of air from the ac vent. Thing was, the heel was very red and hot & you could feel the heat from it. My Doc took one look and knew what it was and put me on some gout medicine.
Last few week now I've been getting severe stabbing like pains in the right ankle and left arch. These shot's of pain take me breath away. I've an appointment with my Doc this week. But this time I pretty sure this isn't gout but something to do my pinched nerve at L-4/5.
Also pain from neck into both arms.
    Just Great !
    Hang in there.

I feel like my ability to walk is being comprimised and that I my land up in a wheel chair Dont want that yet hope you get some answers Rose
  • If you've checked with a doctor or medical professional, then I find that rest and fully reclining is my only help. If you have not checked with a medical professional since this searing pain has started up, please do. I was told this is dangerous....and the nerves can be permanently damaged. Mine are.

My damaged nerves run down the S1 dermatome and were tested to be both S1 nerves on both legs. Have you looked at a dermatome map? (Can search that online). That may help narrow down what nerve it might be. With mine being the S1, it makes sense that reclining helps so much. I do not lay flat. Even at night in bed, I keep my legs up on 2 pillows. I lay flat on my back and do not roll over, twist or turn.

During the day, I do NOT bend, lift or twist. I keep my back straight, if I must turn I keep my shoulders with my hips....if I must get in a car, I keep my shoulders with my hips (which makes getting in the car look odd, but must be done). Do not "drop" down on one hip like most do without thinking.

I use those grabbers or grippers (9.99 at wally world) for picking things up around the house, they even pick up bobby pins, tiny things. I envision a back brace...any twisting or turning movement can trigger the nerves further.

I was finally sent for an EMG and nerve conduction studies after being told for years to "let the nerves heal and be patient". Finally diagnosed and appropriately treated. A lot of suffering until those tests were finally done.

    Take care,

    Cheri
