Hi Im new to the forum and am desperate for answers, please.

I started with a niggle in my lower back to the right of my spine about 6 months ago....it didnt come on after an injury and I cannot pinpoint it to anything in particular, except maybe an old netball injury..(fell on my bum)
...just woke up with stiffness to begin with.Over the following weeks it got worse, came, went got worse again until the last few weeks, its become excruciating with me waking in the early hours with a crushing pain in my hip when trying to roll over to change position...the pain takes my breath away and is actually worse than labour pains, which I never thought I,d hear myself say that!
I went to the doctor over a week ago who said he thought it could be sciatica (I once fell to the floor with a shooting pain from my hip to my toes, which went numb)and a possible bulging disc.
He referred me for physio.
I saw the physio, filled a questionnaire in about my pain,no physical examination at all.She said my pain doesnt really present typical sciatica and bulging disc...more like the Sacro ilium joint, and probably caused by having 3 children (big babies) a fall on my bum in netball,and/or possible damage to my pelvic muscle during a c section (8 years ago!?) and a laparoscopy 3 years ago.
I was sent home with some exercises which I have done for 3 days.....but the pain, whilst some mornings seems slightly better, seems to have spread around my hips and a little down the tops of my legs and as far up as the ribs on my right side and it is lasting longer, upon waking, until dinnertime......what the hell is going on??
I cant cope with lack of sleep,I am walking around some days like a cripple and Im taking it out on everyone around me.I take ibuprofen, which helps, and hot shower does relieve the pain too,but I want a proper diagnosis.
Im a little miffed that the physio can just send you home with an exercise plan because she THINKS its SIJ......would if it isnt and I am doing more damage?
Im sick of being crammed all the time
thanks for reading

  • hi and welcome to the forum! :H we are here to offer you support and answer what questions we can. it sounds like you are being pushed around a bit.. you need to take control if you feel you are not getting proper treatment, and it sounds as if you could do better, and see another doctor.. have your specific symptoms available and questions you want answered.. don't leave till you feel satisfied with the doctor's care for you!! you might even see a pain specialist for the help they can offer.. lack of sleep is a problem many of us spineys suffer from. check out the "Sleep Problems forum" for some ideas on that.. be sure and check with your present physio if you continue to have pain with the exercises.. good luck to you! stop by anytime! Jenny :)
  • Hi
Thank you for your reply.I will be seeing the doc again soon,I have now started with a burning sensation in my knees and just above....it comes on if I,ve been on my feet for a long time and feels like I am stood near a roaring fire
The good news is,the pain is easing in my hip and buttock, but I am so aware of my movements now,Im very careful, how I sleep,sit,walk.....havent tried to run yet!
I will be asking about this burning sensation, because I dont think the SI joint causes knee burning....does it?
Im also having bloods done (yearly blood pressure review) at the Cardio Vascular Clinic next week,I wonder if my medication is having any effect on my joints? Ive been taking them over 3 years now.

  • It may help to keep a journal when the pain comes and how long it lasts and what relieves it. What makes it worse etc. I find heat comforting for back and leg pain. I hope you get some answers soon and check out the Dermatone map in the FAQ section to see if the nerves of the spine are affecting that part of your body.

I hope you get x-rays or an MRI soon if you're still having excrutiating pain and not sleeping. Take care. Charry

  • SI joint dysfunction can cause nerve pain in your legs and not just sciatica. I would read more on SI joint dysfunction. iFuse advertises on this site and also has some informative videos and information on this problem. I would also recommend trying an SI joint belt. For me it has really stabilized my pelvis so that I can stand and very slowly walk. Unfortunately, it does nothing for the searing nerve pain down my legs but at least I am able to move around more.
