Pain for over a year, contemplating C1/C2 fusion
I started having problems last April, which I thought were tension headaches. What started as tension headaches progressed into muscle spasms throughout my neck and shoulders, and I could not move my neck laterally at all. I am only 36 years old and do not have a history of headaches. I tried everything from osteopathic manipulations, acupuncture, cranio-sacral treatments, rest, pain medications/muscle relaxers, and finally got the most relief from chiropracic care. My C1 and C2 are chronically mis-aligned, and even with adjustments they are back out within a day. My chiropractor has never seen anything like it. Long story short, I finally was referred to an orthopedic who specializes in spines. His office gave me a facet injection 2 weeks ago, but he said the only fix for my problem (skeletal abnormality of my C1, mixed with arthritis and disc degeneration, causing C1/C2 dysfunction) is fusion. The injection gave me brief relief for several days, but now the pain is back and is so severe that I cannot wait for a fusion. I used to be a runner and backpacker, now it is all I can do to make it through my work day. Has anyone else out there experienced these symptoms and had a posterior C1/C2 fusion? I would love to hear anything encouraging......I hope that someday my pain is gone and I can have my life back.
