The thing I am worrying about most is probably not what you would think of. I am suffering from Hot Flashes from Menopause and am afraid it will only get worse after the surgery. My Surgeon wants me in a soft collar for 3-6 weeks and I cant stand even a necklace around my neck. Any unnecessary clothing has stays in my closet!! A neck brace, really?? Ugh, I'm sweating already. I came across this neck brace online that is supposed to keep your temp steady. I wish I saw it sooner, I would have asked my Dr. I'll try calling friday. I spent the past week and half running for clearance from Cardiologist and primary Dr and a liver function spike tossed me at the gastro specialist today to get cleared for surgery. So getting back to the surgeons this week was impossible.
Here's the website, I promise I am NOT trying to sell these things. I am flashing as I sit here. I cant imagine having a collar on too.

Thanks in advance for any and all responses.

  • I am not sure what your doing for hot flashes, but I can personally tell you someone suggested to me to get a product called black Cohosh extracts. I went to the pharmacy one night this past summer, in a panic from them and asked the pharmacist(kind of stupidly), what do you have for hot flashes, as I was burning up. So she said oh they are right here, anyone of these has that in it. I like you was so desperate they were on sale and bought 4 boxes, haha. In the long run, I took them for a few days and bingo the hot flashes let up. I actually still have two boxes left and haven't used them in awhile.

You can also get the gel ice packs that you put in your freezer and can lay down with them on the outside of the collar, or place one behind it. Also you can cut a long sock and run the collar through it and use the sock to hold the gel paks.

I did get a present today, after 11 months and only one more month to go, according to the doctor, well I get to start that year clock all over again, grrr on mother nature.
  • Thanks Tamtam, I've tried Black Cohash before with little relief. A few weeks ago my liver enzymes were high and I almost wasn't cleared for surgery. I had to stop lipitor and the herbs I was taking for the hot flashes and the ALT and AST came back down. So now I cant take any pills and I have no alternative but to sit under a fan or ON an ice pack. I think that neck brace looks great, but if my doctor veto's it they do not take returns (because of the yuck factor of a personal item getting restocked, cant blame them.)

    Happy Thanksgiving!

  • 2 more days, starting to get a little nervous. I have a 6 am appt at outpatient surgery center in NJ. Surgery scheduled for 7:30 am tuesday. Wish me luck!

  • Day 1 post op. throat hurts and thorasic back muscle aches from the wedge they had me on during surgery. will add more later.
  • Welcome over to this side of surgery Pam.

Thanks for taking the time and effort to update us as to how you are doing.

Hope that you will lose the sore throat very soon and that you will start to feel the benefit of your surgery.

What were your symptoms before surgery?

  • Diagnoised by CT spine post milogram:
Dilateral degenerative facet joint disease C3/C4 & C4/C5
Degenerative disc disease ans osteophyte formation at c5/c6, c6/c7, c7/t1.
left cervical radicular dysfunction affecting C6/C7 nerve roots.
    herniation in C7/T1.

Pain and stiffness in neck, trapezoid muscle, left arm in several areas and pain in rt arm. This pain was/is daily and is why I decided upon surgery when all other treatments failed. (Therapy, epidural steroid injections, patches, medications ect)

Now that the swelling had decreased in my throat, I'm having substantial neck pain making it difficult to get in and out of bed. I guess keeping up with meds and ice is the only solution for that right know. And everytime after I eat, my throat seems to swell and it is more difficult to swallow. My throat isn't sore anymore, just feels funny, like I could cough up a ton of phlem if I dared.

Can't type long. Thanks for any advice!!
