Dissolvable Staples

Had my disectomy done Thursday, and my surgeon said he used dissolvable staples, but I had never heard of these. When I research it all I can seem to find is mostly horrible stories about them taking months to heal, being very painful, and even poking back through the skin. Just wondering if anyone here has dealt with these, and how it went?

  • This is very interesting. I have never heard of them. When is your surgery? I had mine in July a L5-S1 fusion. I remember having a lot of steri strips. Also, don't let the internert freak you out. I find they often present the worse case scenario.

Good luck and use this board.

I have never heard of them either. I recently had a spinal fusion L5 S1 and on the front and back incisions my surgeon used steri strips and surgical glue...The steri strips came off within about a week and my incisions healed quickly

  • My surgery was last Thursday, September 26th, it was an L5-S1 discectomy (not micro), and surgeon also did some decompression and repaired another disc I believe.

I've also had dissolvable stitches in the past, and never thought to ask what would be done this time until afterwards while I was in recovery room. They used dissolvable staples on the inside and stitch tape or surgical tape or whatever it's called on the outside. This was what a recovery room nurse told me. My follow up is next Tuesday, October 8th, so I will update if I get more info.
