I think surgery failed AGAIN

This is my second MicroD in the same place. I felt real good the first week and I had high hopes. I'm getting worse by the day. I feel just like I did after my first surgery. I feel like it didn't work. Te pain is so bad. I'm afraid of getting a disc fusion. I've already been out if work a year and had two surgeries. It's affecting my marriage too. Another surgery is gonna ruin me.

  • I don't understand how the pain can be so bad. The pain in my butt bone is beyond words. I have butt cheek pain all the way down to my heel. There's no bone. I don't get it.

  • Have you talked to your doctor? I have seen several posts from you about this. They could possibly order a MRI or CT to check your back again. It's not uncommon to reherniate right after surgery. Fusions suck! I had two of them last year and I still hurt. My last resort is a spinal cord stimulator. I am having the trial in December.
Discectomies 05/08 and 04/11, fusions L4-5 Feb 9,2012 and L3-L4 June 28,2012, Staph infection washout 3/2/2012, Bulged L5-S1. SCS trial on January 17th, 2014, which was a success! Permanent SCS on February 20th.
  • What pain you are feeling in your butt bone may be sciatica. I had the same symptoms before my L5 S1 surgery and it would shoot down my leg. It came pretty frequently.

After my surgery I still had it, and my surgeon said if it continued or became more severe he would send me for a CT Scan. Its not as frequent as it was right after surgery. I use either Biofreeze or Magnilife (for sciatica) and lie down for a few minutes and it seems to ease up. Just saying that yours might be the same. Better check with your surgeon and in the meantime try some Biofreeze...you can get it at a physical therapy place, chiropractor or they even sell it on ebay. If you get it on ebay be sure to ask the seller before purchasing what the expiration date is. Magnilife is sold in some pharmacies, but I couldn't find it in my area so I got it on ebay as well. I always ask for exp dates when I buy anything off ebay.

Good Luck and I hope you get to feeling better. FYI, my surgery was in June of this year.
  • I have and use bio freeze. After my first surgery I got an MRI 3 weeks after and reherniated immediately. I can't get in an MRI now. The one post surgery hurt me for days. I'm waiting for the doc to call back. I can't sit for more than 15 mins. It feels like my butt bone is broken all the time. It feels like someone in choking my calf. It's very weak. I can't stand in my left foot cause it feels dead. It's been the same for a year. I saw the X-ray. I have no bone plus they did a decompression. Why do I still have all the same pain as before either surgery?

  • Any of you people with multiple surgeries and that still have pain, on disability? I'm on work comp. I'm afraid I won't be able to work seeing as I can't even sit or lay on my couch is my environment with pain pills. That's the other thing. Pain meds are starting not to work again. When this happened before they tried me on nerve pain meds and it turns out I'm highly allergic.

I am 33 and on disability for my back. I have had five back surgeries though. If you can't lay in the MRI, see if they can get you a CT. It takes like five minutes for the procedure.

I am a week away from having my second MicroD on my L4-5 disc. I re-herniated it just 2 weeks after my first surgery, Aug 7, 2013. I have great fear that I am going to do it again after the second surgery. Why did you wait for so longer between the first 2 surgeries?

  • They wanted me to strengthen up before my next surgery. I did aquatic pt 3x a week and accupuncture twice a week. I'll ask about a ct scan. They never gave me that option before. I'm 34 btw. Are you on permanent disability? How did you get on disability?

  • I used to make twice as much in a week as a respiratory therapist then I do in month on SSD. No they don't spy on you. They do review your case though to see if u have improved. My review is next July. I also have severe bipolar disorder. I doubt I will be cured from anything, so my review should be fine. They do reviews every 18 months, 3 years, or 7 years depending on your illness. Lets just say I went from a 60 thousand a yr job to getting about 9000 a yr on SSDI.

My mom went back to work after being on SSD for about ten years. She makes above the max about you are allowed to make while you are on disability. You are only allowed to make 1,010 dollars a month. They cut off her payments and billed her for amount that she had been paid for that ten years. Of course, she can't pay that amount. So they dinged her credit and are taking her federal tax refund until it paid for. I want to go back to college but I would end up getting screwed in the end. So, I am kinda stuck. I don't get all that much per much because I didn't pay in as much as someone that works for 40 yrs did. The only good thing about screwing up my back is the fact that my 60 thousand dollar student loan bill has been waived.

  • I feel so bad for you both
Is a re-herniation common? And is it because the surgeon did a terrible job or because the patiet may have twisted or picked up something heavy? Things like that

I speechless, the thought of having to have another surgery so soon makes me cringe

Capsad and mama-shue, my heart goes out to you both and anyonecelse facing similar situations.

Fyi, workers comp pays much more than ss disability, stay on that as long as you can, also
i believe with workers comp you will receive a lump sum settlement in the end.

    Take care and hugs

  • The butt cheek and butt bone pain is off the charts. It's worse than it's ever been. How? How can pain be worse after two surgeries?

  • My NS told me that there is something like an eighty percent chance of reherniation within the first three months after surgery. With my first surgery, I some how managed to make it three years before I had my second surgery. I made it eight months after my second surgery. I had my first fusion in feb 2012 and I herniated the disc above it five months later, I ended up having another fusion. Now I have bulged disc below my fusion. I imagine I will have another fusion within the next couple years. I am having a SCS trial in December and it cannot get here soon enough.

  • It is 5-10% of people that have a discectomy re-herniated with the first 3 months. And 10-15% re-herniated after that second discectomy. There is really no way of knowing exactly what casues it. It could be the surgeons error or patient error. Unless you as the patient know you were doing things that you should not have been doing. We just don't have any luck when it comes to the odds.

I am a stay at home mom so I don't get workmen's comp and I doubt I would get SSD considering I have not worked at a paying job for over 3 years.

I can't breathe right or calm myself down. Could there be a bone chip or something on my butt bone? That's where the worst pain is

There are many things it could be and Capsdad you really need to call your doctor or if you think it is really bad then you need to go to the ER.

You haven't heard from your doctor yet? Keep calling until you talk to them. You shouldn't have to be dealing with all this pain for so long. Or head to the nearest ER.

I am sorry to hear that you do not have very many options for pain relief. Hopefully you will be able to find out what is wrong and start getting better.
