Succesful SI fusions

I haven't posted for awhile. Guess that is because I was busy having my SI joints fused. The right side in april and the left side sept 24. Immediately the pain is gone from the SI joint. The only pain is from the incision. I am so pleased. I am still partial weight bearing from the recent surgery. I am so glad I had this done. the pain had become unbearable. I am a very active person and the only thing I could do was swim and that was using a pull buoy so I did not kick because that hurt. I hope to be back to riding and walking soon. running is out as I am fused from L1-S1 also.

I know that something will have to give now that such a huge bunch of me doesn't move - from my mid back to my hips. I am working on my strength and flexibility. And of course I am back in the pool. I love the feeling of being weightless.

My new picture shows the pins in my SI. I am small so I only have 2 pins per side. It was done with IFuse and I was home in the early afternoon after an 8:30 start. No overnight hospital stay!!!

L4/L5 laminectomy, L4/L5 360 fusion with instrumentation, L1 to L5 fusion, L5/S1 fusion w/ disc replacement, left and right SI joints fused.

  • So glad to hear that all has gone well with your SI joint fusions. Except for the fact that I have had my hardware removed your spine X-ray looks like mine does. I am going to see a spine surgeon that does the Ifuse procedure in December and I hope to fix my si joints. I just joined this forum and I don’t know how to send a personal email however I would like to discuss with you how your surgeries went.

  • I have already been approved fir the I bone fusion but have tried the RFA nerve burning first as a last thing before I have this surgery,I am afraid that if I have the si fusion I won't ever be able to ride my horse again Any ideas

ALIF/PLIF may 2012 ., c5/ c6 fusion sept 2012 , March 2013 removal of hard ware from tri level fusion of course I still have cages total of eight and have fused well but the si joint pain has me crippled I have tried it all I am feeling relief from the RFA but also pain from the dying nerves however I can walk better
  • Hello to anyone who has had I-fuse. My doctor recently recommended I-fuse surgery for me, as I had two successful diagnostic SI joint injections which relieved the pain. However, I am now learning that my doctor's office is not wanting to do any more I-fuse surgeries because they say that while the insurance companies will precertify the procedure, some are then denying payment after the surgery has been performed. My doctor's office did send my paperwork to the insurance company, and my iinsurance just precertified the procedure on Friday, but now my doc office is saying the surgery is a no-go because of all the hassles of this procedure getting reimbursed. They said it is a widespread problem, so I'm wondering how people are going about getting the surgery and am eagar to learn how others may have successfully gotten it through their insurance companies so that I might have some chance of doing the same. Does anyone have any advice for me? Have you heard this same story? I am so confused right now because I would like to be out of pain, and it is awful when a doctor tells you you need surgery but he won't do it because he doesn't want to NOT get paid from your insurance company. I just don't know what to do. Anyone's advice would be appreciated.

  • I have been in contact with quite a few IFuse patients and never have heard of the insurance issues. My insurance paid and we aren't even required to pre-certify.

I suppose you could talk to your insurance company, tell them what your doctor said and find out what they problem is.

    Good luck.

  • I have had the nerve burned and it was very painful , and I don't get any relief scared that I won't get any from the si fusion either. I can barely walk

  • Hi all,

Well since the op, I can honestly say I am still doing the rounds with the consultant, the hospital, having injections and on and on it goes. I really expected that after the op I would recover and that would be the end of it but OHHH NOO...

Top area of pelvis now aches and also my right hip and basically all around the right flank of my buttock.. They can't find anything wrong. I've had xrays, ultra sound, steroid injections and nothing works. Personally I think it's because the implant has pushed things a wee bit out of line (well that seems plausible). Im having to carry on the same as before the op. i.e. sitting on certain pillows, can't get comfortable, pain when lying on side, still doing physio (which does absolutely nothing), pain killers. Oh and can't go for nice walks as it becomes very painful.

Don't get me wrong the op worked as I dont have that one particular pain anymore but now I have several more that nobody can pin point where they're coming from........

    I COULD ............S C R E A M.......
  • I have battled with this for 5 years and have to get it fixed. EVERY other treatment has offered no relief. Ever. Don't want to be on narcotics forever because they barely "take the edge off". Please offer any insight before I see the surgeon later this week. Thanks and hang in there. Les

Was hoping I'd see more Info or chat with others who have had ifuse or are going to be having it soon. I'm scheduled in 2 weeks to finally have my right si joint fused. I'm nervous and excited. I battled my insurance all last year. Finally was approved last week. I've had numerous procedures and tests. All my pain seems to be from my right si joint.

If anyone has any tips, tricks, overall information that'd be wonderful :-)

  • I am just curious if you have had the SI Fusion done yet? If so, can you offer any advice?
I am scheduled for my right side on Tues. the 17th and I'm so anxious to talk to someone who has recently had it done.

If you would like to private message me I wouldn't mind talking more with you and any advice you can offer.

    Thank you!!

I’m looking for help, recommendations about my condition. I have been suffering chronic back pain for the past 8 years. I have small herniated disk L5-S1. In the past had PT and facet/ SI joint block and did help.
To make my story brief, I'm disabled now, I’m just 47 and been home for the past 3 years. My symptoms are getting worse, but at the same time they are unique to me.
I have a lumbar pain that travels across my back from right to left side. But the right side it’s the worse. I feel a constant dull, nagging pain, pressure and sometimes burning. I can’t sit, walk, and stand for any normal period of time.
I have seen many spine surgeons; all just focus on my disk. The last Dr from xxxx Hospital in NY is the only one mention the SI joint. I had a CT scan and its normal, but the SI joint injection relieves my pain, no for too long but it worked.
I been doing some research and statistics shows patients with post op period more than 2 years are suffering same pain after I Fuse or worse. I postpone going back to the surgeon because I’m terrified to have a spine fusion and I Fuse. My goal is if I need surgery is be pain free after.
Does anyone out there had had I Fuse in NJ or NY and is willing to share their experience, results. I would like to have some advice and Drs Name recommendations.
    Thank you.
