Cervical Fusion/CatScan Report

Ok, I have had 2 cervical fusions done. First one was in November of 2002, had levels C4-C5 and C5-C6 fused through the front. In July of 2012 after years of failed injections, PT, and found out the previous fusion never healed, I had to get a 3 level fusion this time, the previous screws were beginning to pop up from the hardware and I had a anterior and posterior fusion done C4 through C7. Here I am almost 2 years later, still having issues. When my incision on the back of my neck healed, I have a large bone sticking out the back. Original surgeon told me it was fine. Twice I asked about it. Anyway the pressure has become unbearable, I can't sit anymore without something behind my head, my right shoulder is down my arm hurts. I can't even reach back to scratch my own back. This whole time I have still been going to pain management. He looks at the back of my neck and tells me that's not normal to have that bone sticking out it needs to be fixed. So he converses with a neurosurgeon who agrees and I have an appointment this week. They had my get a cat scan AGAiN and although I'm no doctor I don't like what I'm seeing. I have been through hell and back since 2002!with this neck, it's definitely has changed my whole life in every aspect, haven't worked in 2 years. My question to whoever reads this May give me some input as to my report. I'm tired of constantly being in pain, it's taken over me. Here is what report says......the part that makes me uneasy

The patient is status post anterior cervical fusion extending from C4-C7 with a plate and screws extending into these respective vertebral bodies. There are bone graphs interposed between the intravertebral discs at these levels. While there is fusion across the C4-C5 and C6-C7 discs, there is incomplete fusion across C5-C6 disc. At the C5-C6 disc, there is a component of bony fusion at the most anterior aspect of the intravertebral disc space but not posteriorly.

Ok, please someone tell me this does not mean for the second time my fusion didn't fuse at the C5-C6 level?? This last surgery was a tough one and I'm so frustrated. Any opinions or help would be greatly appreciated!!

I am sorry to read that you have been in pain for so long and that you needed to have a second fusion surgery. A 3 level fusion from the front and the back must have been a very tough recovery. Still being in pain two years later must be very frustrating and very hard for you.

I am glad that you have an appointment with a neurosurgeon this week. I suggest that you go prepared with a list of questions that you want to ask and hopefully, after the appointment, you will have the answers that you need.

I do understand that you would like to have other opinions about what the report of the CT scan is saying, but must tell you that no-one here is medically trained and so it is not appropriate for us to try to give our opinions. Much better that you wait and get correct information from a neurosurgeon who will also be able to examine you and take your medical history.

As you will see when you read Liz's links, it is against the forum rules to ask for, or try to give, opinions or interpretations on tests. I quote :

" 5.13 You agree not to ask for any analysis or interpretation of diagnostic tests (ie MRI, CTScans, EMG, etc.),

5.14 You agree not to respond to any request for analysis of diagnostic tests (ie MRI, CTScans, EMG, etc.) "

There are many on here who will sympathise with you and have experienced similar situations. They will be happy to share their experiences and support you through this.

Please come back and tell us how you get on with the neurosurgeon, what he says and what his plan for you is.
