Swallowing after Cervical disc replacement

How does it feel to swallow the first week after surgery? Any suggestions as to what I should eat after surgery (first week)?
Callie G

  • Are thy making the incision from the anterior or the posterior? For me which I had a posterior Cervical spinal fusion and I didn't have any problems with swallowing. I just remember my head feeling heavier but I have head that when a fusion is done anterior it can feel different but not painful. The only thing that may be slightly painful swallowing wide would be your throat. So just beware that your throat may be a little sore.
  • Did you dicuss this with your surgeon? He should be able to give you a list of foods that would make the first weeks post op easier to swallow.
Cold drinks obviously, yogurts, smoothies, ensure type drinks for calories, ice cream, jello, etc. Mashed potatoes.
