collapsed disc at L4-5

I am a 59 year old male, very active, motorcycle, jet ski, construction,.too much passion for life,if there is such a thing. I have had two previous back surgeries, to relieve pressure off the nerve in hip and leg. The first was great, lasted about a year, at which time it re-ruptured. had the same surgery over, results were less than hoped for. Within a week after the surgery the disc completely collapsed, pinching the nerve, pain was unbearable but has since subsided. Now the doctor wants to do a spinal fusion at L4-5 insisting without it the pain will return, maybe 6 weeks, maybe 6 years....This is a workman's comp case, and don't have the option of waiting too long. Just wanted some feedback on suggestions for what options I may have, hate getting cut on if I'M not in pain right now, but realize the risk of waiting is great from developing bone spurs. But am leary about the preasure it will place on the disc above and below. Any suggestions are appreciated...Thanks...
