Help please!! Mid back pain.

I have no idea what to do. I have had back pain for years but in the last few months it has been unbearable. I woke up a few months ago at 4ish in the morning because i was in so much pain. In an attempt to make the pain better i went to the kitchen to make a hot water bottle only to end up passing out on the floor. Since then this has happened probably 10+ times and usually lasts between 30mins to 1.5hrs. Sometimes i have even been sick from the pain. The pain is in the very middle of my back but i can also feel it in my stomach which is why im often sick. Ive been told its posture related by my GP but im really worried it could be more serious. Im going to work at a summer camp all summer and i am so scared that it will happen while im there. Does anyone have any ideas of what i could do??? I have been making efforts to improve my posture but these back spasms are still occuring. Any suggestions would really be appreciated.

  • Hi. Have you had any diagnostic tests? Have you seen any specialists & been examined? I have passed out from pain (gone white & flock sweat) I've thrown-up but these seem like quite extreme reactions to 'poor posture'. I'm no medical professional & you don't give a lot of details but I have a severely degenerated spine, I've had a dead gallbladder that made my body septic & I've had kidney damage...all 3 'ring bells' from your description!
I think you need to get back to your doctor, or another & advocate for yourself. If you do 'just' have incredibly severe spasms there are medications, injections (Botox + steroids work well for mine) & physical therapy routines that can help. I use a hot water bottle too! I like very hot Epsom salt (magnesium) baths & my doctor advised taking a magnesium suppliment for spasms & nerve pain.
First you REALLY need to find out what's wrong with you so the correct treatments can be given. Please see another doctor & tell him/her what you wrote here ;-)

    Best of luck.

  • Thank you EnglishGirl! I have had an xray and they said that it was normal. The spasms tend to occur the night after if been lifting things that are heavy which is why i kind of agreed that it could be posture related. I have also had a blood test which suggested that i had a virus but they said that it may have been left over from the last time that i had a cold. I went to a physio therapist and he cracked my back and the next night i was in agony again. So i have been too scared to go back.
  • Until you've had an MRI you can't rule out structural damage. It's advised that you never have chiropractic 'adjustments' (crack your back) if you have a damaged spine. It can cause more issues & pain. I've been told to stay away by every specialist I've seen. I know of people who have gone straight from having their back cracked to the ER for surgery!! I'd leave them alone.

Can you avoid lifting? Is it a necessary part of your job? Will being at camp be very physical? I'd go back to your doc & see if he can get you an MRI & suggest a 'rescue plan' for when/if it happens. the ice/heat, magnesium, Epsom salts etc help me. There are meds available for muscle spasms.
