Cervical Neck pain, No root nerve compression

I'm really confused with my MRI result and the symptoms that I have.

My MRI reports shows that I have 3 disc bulges. One is central and right paracentral bulge at c5-6 level and 2 central bulges at c4-5 and c6-7. Although all three disc bulge are WITHOUT compression of nerve roots.

My symptoms on the other hand include sharps radiating pain that begins from my shoulder blades and runs along the entire right arm. I do not have any prominent tingling sensations but sometimes i do suffer from numbing in my fingers. From what i have researched, most of my symptoms are aligned towards Cervical radiculopathy. However since my MRI shows no nerve compression, I;m really confused as to what is causing this radiating pain in my neck and arm. Is it possible to have this pain without nerve compression/damage?

I have visited neurologist, neuro-surgeon and a spine surgeon. Most of them seemed less worried and I was advised to take some physiotherapy. One of the doctors suggested surgery. Now Im really worried because of the fact that I do not precisely know what is the severity of my condition. I'm not particularly scared of having the surgery but of the fact that Im unable to decide decide whether a surgery is needed.

The MRI does not show everything it is a common misunderstanding in society today. There are multiple people on this board that have had worse conditions than the MRI was able to show. While the MRI is one of the greater achievements of mankind you should not view it as the definitive determinant of whether or not you need surgery.

Making the decision to have or not have surgery is difficult. Do your research and put in an honest amount of deliberation on the topic.

    Good luck.

  • I too have disc bulges from c4 -c7 only c6/c7 shows nerve root compression. It is possible that a weight bearing scan will show more. Try to request further investigations, I am in the same boat and will be requesting a weight bearing scan next. I am 9 years into this problem, tried everything to no avail, my symptoms are only worse now and I am considering an operation as I have run out of options and tolerence to the awful drugs I am forced to take if I am to get any relief. Best of luck.
