Definition
A psychiatrist is a medical doctor with post-graduate training in psychology and licensed to diagnose and treat psychological disorders. A psychiatrist can provide counseling and behavioral therapy and also prescribe medication. Psychiatrists often treat patients suffering from depression related to chronic back pain. A course of antidepressants a psychiatrist prescribes may involve any of the classes of anti-depressant drugs, from tricyclic antidepressants, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) or monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs).
