Chronic back tension

Hi all,

I recently saw a chiropractor for about 2 months, really wish I hadn't..  anyways I had some neck discomfort which seems to be resolved but I complained to him about a kind of "kink" in my midback where he pushed between my shoulder blades and it crunched, then he proceeded to use a Russian stimulation machine on my back muscles. Though I had no pain during that day (other than the initial "kink", my lack has been insanely tight since then. I'm not 100% sure if he caused it but I don't want to go back now. Massage seemed to help and trigger points/heat also help but it just keeps coming back. So frustrating.

I'm just wondering if anyone has had a similar experience that might expedite my journey to better health. I'm 26 years old and I sit a lot but I'm in good shape so I hope I can bounce back. Recently I've been doing stretches to combat forward shoulder and head posture. I had xrays which I will pick up eventually from the chiro if i need to take them to a doctor. They showed some minor tilts and rotations in my spine (mainly between my shoulder blades) but I don't get the feeling there's any big problems.

Also, possibly related: every time I correct my posture by straightening my back I hear some clicks and crunches in my tspine... this has been going on for at least 4 years I think. It happens about a dozen times on a bad day and there are some good days where it doesn't happen at all. No pain involved. I used to be stomach sleeper but not in the last year or so. I just end up on my stomach once in awhile at night but I mostly sleep on my back.

Any idea what I should do next? I've kind of just been stretching and using heat for relief, hoping it will go away on its own, but I can't keep those muscles relaxed. I bought some magnesium spray and a body back buddy as my next steps.

Thanks for your input in advance. Sorry if this seemed long, I tried to include as much info as possible. I'd like to add that this isn't debilitating pain but still very frustrating. It's probably a 3/10 or maybe a 4/10 when sitting.

  • Hi. I'm sorry you have been having such problems. I would suggest seeing your primary care physician. I would talk to the PCP about potentially going to PT and when it might be appropriate for other testing or referral to a spine orthopedic specialist. Usually insurance will require some time with PT prior to authorizing an MRI. I have a lot of experience with cervical and lumbar issues but am new to having frequent and increasingly severe thoracic pain. I'm going to be seeking an appointment with my ortho.
