Drs.Google...Yahoo...Msn..etc

Some tough love here

Nothing beats getting a real diagnosis from a real Dr.

GP, Specialist does not matter because its not guessing, guesstimating, educated guess because of research, could be,may be what if....

Search engines are woundrous beasts that will pinpoint exactly what you may or may not have to somewhat pinpoint precision...like throwing a rock into a turbulent pond...there IS a bullseye..generally.

Rather than going to the doctor..any doctor is better than guessing...some folks will bounce around in pain and suffer rather than take a shortcut to specifics.

This isnt pointing any fingers at any one..thats not the message..what is is dont needlessly suffer while procastination rules.

Why fear the noise in the dark? Open that door and look to see what it is.

Be wise Spiney,

  • So true William, another issue is when you look up a common cold, you’ll be worried you have lung cancer by the time you finish curing yourself on web! Guys and Gals, as William advised, make a appointment! The sooner it’s fixed, the less permanent damage you’ll sustain!

I agree totally!! If you can take the time to google you can take the time to call a doctor.
    Well said, William.

  • A certain website's "Symptom Checker" is notorious for making people think they have abdominal cancer when it's really just a gas bubble.  David has probably heard of Dr. Google (a lot) before in his tenure!  It's the status quo name for Internet jockeys.

    absolutely correct!!!!!

There are some good things about google etc..not sure how many of you remember that time when researching something meant digging through the long skinny drawers at the library for the card that would tell you where to find the book that might have an index to tell you if it even describes the anatomy of the human spine LOL  HOURS of library work to look something up!  (if you don't remember that, then look up the "old way of finding a book in the library with index cards" it will give you a new appreciation for what kids did for projects in school prior to the internet!)...if the doctor gives you a word that you just don't get, or you need to look up the structure he/she is talking about, it's easy to look it up and learn about what they are-usually with pictures and graphics.  I also find it is very useful if i know i need to describe where my pain is to the doctor i can pull up the anatomy figures and go "it's THERE".....and let them decide if it's referred pain or muscle, or nerve or whatever.....

but wow, depending on the internet for a diagnosis is NOT a plan!!!!!

    William,

    I went on Check_me_out_cause_I_have_problems.com

After I put in all my symptoms, surgeries, medications, etc, it can back saying that I should be 125 years old,  probably on Oxygen, can walk 2 steps, teeth decaying, fingernails failing off, my big toe expanding, my eyesight is now 20/7000

I was glad I checked that all out... Now, I can find a doctor who will give me one pill to correct all of this!

CRAZY isnt it.  But you would be surprised how many people go to the internet searching for solutions to their problems.   At almost any site, you could put in the same symptoms and they would tell you that there is a problem.

In all my years seeing different doctors, they all do complain about their "Self Diagnosis Patients"   They all agree that research is very important, it can help  you to narrow down some possibilities.  But it should never be used as the answer to your questions.

I was one of those guys for about a week...

After the shock wore off and my chiropracter and all around pain guide mentored me a bit..said we got the heavy stuff..dont go online, dont look for things.,(thats when imagination kicks in) thats wrong with me

Dont catastrophise..this is going to be hard enough..he knew then what was going to happen

Dont make things bigger than they are..because they will be bigger than they are

    (Imagination rule no 1)

Dont overthink to help us..(it wont help)

Dont rush...dont rush.dont rush.DONT RUSH...things will either heal..or they wont..lets see what we can do to get you as better as we can.

    Its a team effort.,I(he)...talk..you(me) listen.

Its gonna hurt..some of will hurt..some will stay hurt..dont add to the mental stress and pain_internet_doc i gotta question interface.

    Ask doc,write down things..look up things.,not treatment,not other things..specific things.

When at nite and you think of things? Write those down to ask doc.

The internet can be a powerful tool

It can come between a person and understanding.

I found Spine-Health after drilling down and began the mind body spirit balancing act..well tried to..still a work in progress..its like mowing the lawn

  • I am thankful for this site!  I first came to Spine Health in 2006 when I first got hurt.  The articles were good, gave a pretty good description of what to expect and didn't scare the crap out of you.   The forum was very helpful then as it is now.  If there ever is an award given for this site, Ron deserves it.  I've seen Moderators come and go over the years, but he has been the constant level headed guy who kept the site on the rails.  Lord knows there have been a few "interesting people" who have been members and who gave unbelievable advice, but Ron (and Bruce way back then!) kept things in line.

That's one thing I really enjoy about this site is that people can ask questions, give advice and can weed out (no reference to pot!) the bad information that can appear on line.
