  • Been through all the treatments, nothing worked. Harrington rods for 19 years, horrific pain for about the last 4 years. Just got new MRI's yesterday, go to the Doc Oct. 6th. but I am pretty much hopeless at this point. Only 29 years old, toooooooo young for this &%#@!
  • I had my surgery in 1983 and have been painfree until Jan. Now I have the same pain you are talking about. They are saying my main pain is arthritis. I see a NS. I have also had cortisone shots into the facet joints. I went today to see the NS and he is now talking surgery but first wants to try some water physical therapy and some Neurontin. My pain is in the lumbar left side and goes down into my butt and back of my leg. When I am going to sleep and lay on the left side it feels like a pinch or something is stuck and I cant roll over.Doc also told me today I am disabled...at 38!
Let me know if you want to talk more.

  • hi,
i had a spinal fusion in 1983 and 1984. The rod broke the first time around. i wore the boston jacket and milwaukki brace before the surgery in 1983. i am 41 and really haven't had much extreme pain until about a year ago. i'm currently in pain everyday. the pain is mostly from my left hip, down the front of my leg, to my knee. xrays & mri's show ddd and spinal stenosis below my fusion, which goes from T6-L4.
i have considered an epidural. did it help you?
i'm so sorry to hear about your situation...i hope you get some relief!!!
  • Hi...Im glad to find people with the same issues as myself. I had spinal surgery as well when I was 13 with the heringtons. Everything was good till my 20's... then age, excessive exercise and childbirth took its toll I assume. I had a revision in 2004, where they took out the old rods and fused me a couple more both directions. Now 4 years later...still numbness down my leg, and bad back pain. It seems worse than the first couple of years...maybe the narcotics shielded the pain for the past couple years. Ive tried everything as well...gets frustrating going to new doctors and never getting any where. My question: I am now trying decompressing therapy---Is this harmful or could it do some good???
  • Im so glad to find people with the same issues that I have when I was 11 I had Severe scoliosis. I had a double curve it was bad!! I had the surgery with the 3 harrington rods the spinal fusion where they took the bone from my hip and all that other stuff!!!

  • It's nice to know you arent alone huh. I had PhysicalTherapy too. Both water and land, neither worked for me. I have a great NS who wanted to try EVERYTHING before talking about surgery. I have also done cortosone shots and a steriod epidural. Now I have an appointment for surgery on May 29, 2009. I am so happy. Strange to say you are happy about surgery, but I cannot take all the pain so I am sure you will all know what I mean and be happy for me. They doctor is worried becauce I am so young (38) that arthritis will come back pretty bad in 10-15 years. I will deal with it then. For now I am happy. I had a CT Mylogram and he said my nerves are in a ball, they are supposed to hang loose like spaghetti. Maybe that is what is wrong with some of you? Hope you all feel better.

  • I am 49 yr.s old, have untreated scoliosis (it wasn't believed by my parents to be that big of an issue back in 1973), and now have 5 herniated discs from S-1 & up... My pain suddenly became unbearable @ 2 yr.s ago... The 1st neurosurgean I saw laughed when he saw my X-rays & MRI, saying I had the spine of a 75 yr. old & wouldn't touch me! That was extremely depressing as I love my job, which is running a GED & adult edu. center...
I then went to a specialist in scoliosis & he said he could do the surgery, but he doubted I'd be satisfied w/ it due to the fragility of my spine (I'm glad he was honest).
For me, Pilates has helped much more than any P.T... I have lost 35 lb.s & am now a size 4 (at 5'8")...
What bothers me is the fact that injections didn't work, I paid 3K for spinal decompression (insurance deemed it experimental) and it didn't even work (I've since heard that it rarely does on scoliosis patients), and that I have to rely on morphine 60mg. twice a day to even be able to function. It makes me soooo tired, doesn't even take much pain away when the weather is bad or it's that time of the month... My pain specialist gave me a trial of Provigil to help counteract the drowsiness, but I've been fighting w. Anthem to cover it since Jan. 2009!
I am currently debating whether to break down & have my discs fused or keep hanging in there while trying to hope science wil come up with some cure...
Thanks for allowing me to vent!

    SCOLIOSIS

    Wave Wave Wave
WELL I'V READ ALL THE POSTS ON SCOLIOSIS. i HAD HARRINGTON ROD SURGERY AT AGE 20,(1978) WORE THE MILWAUKEE BRACE FOR TWO YEARS WHEN I WAS 16 TO 18. REALLY STARTED HAVING PAIN IN THE LAST 7 YEARS. OH, HAD THE ROD REMOVED IN 1979 BECAUSE IT WAS PAINFUL WHEN I RAISED MY LEFT ARM. IT MUST HAVE BEEN RUBBING OVER SOMETHING. I ALSO HAVE FIBROMYALGIA AND OSTEOPENIA. I HAVE A BACKWARD "S" SHAPED CURVE. MY CURVES HAVE GOTTEN MUCH WORSE. I WENT FROM 45 THORACIC AND 34 LUMBAR. THEY ONLY OPERATED ON THE TOP CURVE AND GOT IT DOWN TO 28 DEGREES. NOW I'M 51 AND IN MUCH PAIN WITH 59 AND 51 DEGREE CURVES. IN THE MIDDLE OF MY FUSION WHICH IS 7 VERTEBRAE, THERE HAS BEEN A CLEAN BREAK IN TWO PIECES AND THE THE TOP OF THAT FUSION HAS SLIPPED OFF ABOUT ONE QUARTER OF THE BOTTOM. IT LEAVES A LEDGE EFFECT RIGHT WHEN THE BOTTOM CURVE IS TURNING INTO THE TOP CURVE. i WOULD LIKE TO FIND A DOCTOR THAT COULD REPAIR THIS. I WAS INTERESTED IN THE DOCTOR IN TEXAS THAT DID SURGERY ON ONE OF THE BLOGGERS THAT ENDS WITH 1317. MY EMAIL ADDRESS IS HONEYBABY232@AOL.COM IF U CARE TO SEND THE NAME.
BELIEVE ME I KNOW HOW THE REST OF U FEEL. IT IS A VERY DEBILITATING DISEASE.
