Lower back pain post motor vehicle accident

I was involved in an accident over 5 months ago. Someone pulled out in front of me. I was going about 35 mph, airbags deployed, both vehicles were totaled. My typical accident injuries have gone away but I have horrible lower back pain. I can touch one of my vertibrae and it feels like I'm getting hit with a hammer. Bending, sitting, typical household chores all trigger the pain. It's especially bad when I get out of bed in the morning. MRI came back normal. I'm at a loss and so is my doctor so I meet with a neuro team next month. Has anyone ever dealt with this?

    Hello bogisty!

    Welcome to Spine Health

To total 2 cars, that had to be a bad wreck, I am so sorry. But it sounds like you are on the right track to get a diagnosis. Do some research before you go and make notes of your pain, daily routine, what triggers the pain and what level the pain is. By you going in with notes gives them more to work with. Below are a few articles on nerve pain.

Most of the members have dealt with this since we all have spinal issues. In your case, it will be finding the cause first.
Take care and please keep us posted.

  • The neurologist did an addition xray that of course came back squeaky clean. She has recommended physical therapy. This is my THIRD round of pt. This is so incredibly frustrating. Not to mention expensive. I want my life back and to be able to enjoy my time with my small children. It seems as though no one cares or thinks that I'm making it up since imaging tests show nothing.

Were any other diagnostic testing, such as MRI, CT scan, ever done? You can always get another opinion or a third. Keep digging until you get an answer, don't give up.

Did a neurosurgeon look at your MRI?

    Not neurologist but neurosurgeon.

  • I haven't seen a neurosurgeon. I'm taking everything step by step and following doctors orders for the sake of settlement. I'm 2 weeks in with this new round of PT and I'll give it 2 more before I request a follow up with my neurologist. I've been doing some new stretches in PT that I haven't done in the past and now my mid back is flaring up after being in no pain for quite a while- constant cool and tingling feeling between my shoulder blades. Talk about taking one step forward and two steps back. There was an MRI done on my lower back which came back unremarkable.

  • Even if my MRI is unremarkable if I’m still in pain weeks later I’ll take it to an orthopedic spine surgeon or neurosurgeon just to be sure.

  • I agree with the other posters, there's something causing your pain and you may (unfortunately) have to go to more doctors to get your answers, but with all that pain you're still in, there is an injury. Somewhere. Car accidents really bang you up, especially a high impact crash like yours. But MRI's are just one piece of the puzzle. There are other structures there that may be causing your issues. I'm not a doctor, nor do I play one on TV, but I'd say it's a matter of finding a doctor who will dig a little deeper. This is my own bias, nothing more, but I think an orthopedic spine surgeon is a good place to go. I think they are more focused on treatment over just finding surgical cases. A pain management specialist might be another direction for you to go to. Good luck! I hope you get answers and even more important treatment.

  • Hey Bogistry, You’re not alone. I am similar situation mva April of this year. My pain are Lower back & sciatica. Saw many doctors including spine & pain management. No doctors could give me answer why I am still having so much pain. Just like you my mri came back normal. I Tried pt, acupuncture chiropractor, epidural prp injection all with no avail. I wish and hope your doctor could find the source of your problem

  • Hi bogistry, how are you doing these days? I hope pt is helping you

  • So I've been seeing a spine physical therapist for almost 2 months and to my surprise I think is helping a little. I don't have a shredding feeling through my hip when I bend like I did before so that is a major plus (pt thinks my hip got jammed up when the dash pushed into my legs). But that one vertebrae in my lower back is still painful to touch and still hurts daily. And now I'm getting a deep aching pain through my hip. It's like when one pain stops another one starts like some sort of never ending cycle; but at least the 4 month long migraine is gone because that was awful. When the accident happened I expected to be sore for a few weeks; not to still be spending thousands of dollars 8 months later still trying to find some relief. I'm so ready to just feel better, get back to being the mom I was before, and settle my case
