Neck Size

Does the size of ones neck determine a better outcome??? I've given this a lot of thought....I have a very small neck...in fact they had to order in my neck brace before I could leave the hospital and the tag had xsmall/asian....from day 1 I have always felt like I am carrying around a ball and chain and have severe neck fatigue......I do have a lot of hardware but just wondering if the size of ones neck has anything to do with pain after surgery...much later....mine is 18 months old.

  • Shar51, I wouldn't guess so. I fractured a vertebrae many years ago and when they finally removed the brace (and I'm petite too with small bones)I had such severe neck fatigue. I finally insisted on therapy. I didn't have surgery so I don't know if it would be appropriate. But I was told in recent therapy that my front neck muscles were not strong enough and that's why my head feels so heavy, I want to take it off for a few hours!
  • I don't think so. I also had to have a collar specially made while I was in the hospital because I'm small. I think factors that effect outcome overall are general heatlh at time of surgery, smoker vs. nonsmoker, etc.
