Does anyone know about trazadone? My Rehab Dr recently put me on this. She said it will help me sleep at night and it helps with nerve pain. She told me years ago they used it as a antidepressant but have found it useful now in chronic pain and to aide in sleep. I am on the smallest dose 50 mg. I don't think it does anything as far as sleep goes. I actually feel more wired and unable to sleep. I do feel the nerve pain has been helped.I have only been on it for 4 days. You think I should keep trying it or call the Dr. She had also mentioned Lyrica or neurontin as a possibility.
When I search the internet on this drug , I havent seen anything that states it will help with nerve pain.
Any ideas on this drug? Bethy

  • IIRC, it affects some people different. I believe my doctor told me if it "revved" me up to take it in the am.
I also remember it giving me some vivid dreams.

Yes I was also told of its use as a antidepressant and nerve pain med.

I'd suggest you check with your doctor before changing anything.
  • Having tried both neurontine is superior for all around daily nerve pain and trazadone ( I was prescribed 300 mgs at bed time with remeron another sedative ) The stuff knocked me out bur it puts you at risk for falling at high doses.

  • Remeron itself alone put me into la-la land for like 36 hours after one dose! My doc asked me to then try a half tab. It only knocked me out for 24 hours straight!

Trazadone gives me long vivid dreams and a fullnights sleep, but I develop nasty headaches after taking it for 2-3 nights.

The combintaion you are on would put me out for days on end
  • Remeron put me in a very calm state for about a week but like Lyrica and Neurontin that side effect wore off. I'm glad that now I stayed with the Remeron because my pain levels have dropped off and I have more energy than I have had for over 2 years. Some med's take time adjusting in your body and you have to give them a chance to work. I take 45mg Remeron and 1200mg neurontin. I will say that the Remeron make you eat like a pot smoking monkey.

  • I could not stay with it. The JOB thing got in the way!
It cut into my sleep time to much. It was either give up the Remeron or the job...

  • For me its a great drug. My Psychiatrist put me on it a couple years ago simply as a means to sleep. Puts me to see in around 30 Minutes to 45 from when I take it. After that it does not work. You need to go to bed when you take it or it will not work. It would be great if it ws also for nerve pain as I really could use it. I have had no problems myself with the drug. :)
  • started on lyrica on thursday..and with one pill I was totally out to lunch...this was not good...it was 75 mg. but I was so dizzy and my vision so impaired....I am on an anti-depressant; trazadone and xanax and I think the combo might be too much...I would appreciate any thoughts.
  • I took it briefly; it put me to sleep immediately, but a couple of hours later I was wide, wide awake. I also had very vivid dreams with it, and I don't remember it giving me any relief with regard to nerve pain.

  • I got off the trazadone after a week. I could not sleep with it and it made me very anxious. Dr started me on lyrica instead.
  • Sorry to hear you weren’t able to tolerate the trazodone. I hope the lyrica will work out for you, I‘ve never tried that.

I’ve been taking trazodone for at least 10 years for burning nerve pain/crawling sensation in my leg. It really does help me. Thankfully, I’m able to tolerate it. They started me out at 50 mg, and now I’m on 100 mg.

The only thing I guess you could call a side effect is extreme drowsiness. The only way to take it, in my opinion, is right before bed. And I DO mean right before! The last thing I do before hitting the sheets is take that pill. If I’m not laying down within 15 minutes, it could get dangerous. I’ve always wondered what would happen if there was a fire or something, and I had to get up in the middle of the night… I do sleep very well, I guess I probably wouldn’t if it weren’t for that med.

As for pain relief, my neurontin works best for the burning nerve pain. But when I had the sensation of ants crawling on my skin, I started taking the trazodone, and it really helped!
