What can help the wake up mornings leg pain

Does anyone have any answers for when you wake up and can hardley walk to restroom or closet without having to lay back down? I have spondolethesis deg/disc disease with pinched nerve L5 down both legs and numbing in legs. Takes alot of time in morning for me to function. It does get better but when I first wake up, I hardly make it to bathroom! Such pain... i do try to do few leg exercises, but even those hurt and turning in bed. Ouch


  • Me too. I have been waking up with killer sciatica in my left leg every morning, even if I go to bed without it.

  • Mornings have always been the bane of my existence. I've resigned myself to waking up about an hour before I plan to actually get moving, then taking one of my BT meds and going back to sleep for the hour it takes to kick in. I keep a drink under my pillow and my meds in a drawer next to the bed, so all I have to manage is to sit up. If I'm not up, my family will come in and ask me if I'm on my first or second "get up" so they can plan accordingly. :))(

  • Mornings are incredibly difficult for me as well. I get so, so stiff during the night. Do you take pain meds? I've also been trying to take a dose of my pain meds and my muscle relaxant at around 5am if I wake up. That makes the getting-up part, a few hours later, a little bit easier....

    Like Bionicwoman, I also keep my meds and water right next to the bed...

    Could you try that?

  • who goes to work VERY early (5:30) will sometimes give me a pill as he is on his way out. Then, when my alarm goes off at 6:30 I'm feeling better. As an aside, the first few times he gave me a pill, I think he thought he was giving a pill to the dog 'cause he shoved it way down my throat and I swear he started stroking my neck--just like you do with the dog. LOL. I also try to get up very slowly. I'll sit on the side of the bed before I actually stand. But if you wake up having to go to the bathroon RIGHT AWAY, that tactic won't work so I just hang onto the walls. Susan
  • Same for me as the others ... wake up an hour or two prior and take meds, walk around the house for a bit and go back to bed. It has become so routine over the years, that I don't even think about it these days. Another step in living with chronic pain.

  • Morning leg pain can be caused by your leg falling asleep and not having proper circulation. Or you could be having morning leg pain do to a medical condition. Before doing anything else you need to see you medical doctor. After he/she gives you the Ok, then you can go onto learning what might be the cause of your morning leg pain. If you have morning leg pain you are either experiencing pressure on your leg from your mattress, or from the way you sleep on your mattress. In both cases your morning leg pain is caused by your mattress. The best thing to do is to find a mattress that does not create counter pressure the way a normal mattress does.

    You are doing well with looking for things that make the pain less for you and this will take time and patience, is the pain worse if you go to bed with an increased level of pain, or is the pain the same level on waking all the time. Although pacing may be the key to managing your pain, for you these may be your symptoms as that immobility through the night creates more pain initially.

    Many here have morning initial pain which may be eased with reasonable and cautious mobility, plan those morning events to take twice the time, do not rush, we all have some form of time scale and do things when you are feeling better later in the day I know it is not always convenient to defer things that need to be done in the morning. Make the pace slower at night and see if reducing activity has any impact of your waking level.

    This is perhaps the longest duration you have gone without medication and having woken with pain we are always trying to play catch-up, we are all different and it may depend on how much sleep and the quality of it, could you go six hours during the day without medication. It is all trial and error and the consistent thing about chronic pain is its inconsistency, what may have worked is always hard to replicate the next time and we understandably become frustrated.

    I have as yet to find a satisfactory solution and each day really is a new one.

    You have worked hard doing some PT in the morning while in pain and we all wish you well.


  • I can not walk in the mornings without my cane. I use it to go to the restroom and such. Get my meds. and sit down at the computer lol and wait for them to "kick in" ;)

    L1 - S2 "gone" useless in 1 way or another. DDD. RA. Bone Spurs. Tons of nerve damage/issues. Stenosis. Both knees replaced. 50 yrs old. I had a great fall (hence my user name) at age 41 and it has been a domino effect every since.
  • I found that sleeping with my legs elevated really helps my morning and night leg pain. I can't sleep at all on my side. It makes the pain worse. Sleeping with my legs elevated has been a life saver for me. It may not work for everyone but it works for me.
    I am just guessing but it seems to take pressure off my spine. My fusion is at L4 & L5.
    I also have a pinched nerve in my right thigh and laying down caused savage burning stabbing pain in my thigh. I found the burning searing pain in my thigh stopped when my leg was elevated. Also as an added plus my legs felt much better when they were elevated.
