Walking with a list (hip out to the side)

Everytime I have back pain this happens and it's really embarrassing. I've been told to do exercises where I push in my hip, but it's painful. I also have sciatica. Right now it's really bad and noticeable and I have to go to work like this. It feels like I'm all twisted and I have pain on my right hip bone. Anyone else have this?

  • I'm sorry to hear you're having pain. Yes I have pain in my hip but mainly my foot and back more so. Are they making you do the exercises at Physio? Have you seen a Pain Management Dr. yet? I hope you're feeling better soon. Take care. Charry

  • Meesha Yes I too have this. There are times I wonder which hurts the most, my back or my hip.

    However as Charry mentioned with proper pain control mine rarely flares up now.

    I do walk with my hip "thrown" out all the time now. My Dr said even though I am hardly in pain ( in the hip area ) this is how my body thinks it needs to walk to keep from hurting again. Hope that makes sense.
    When I am in hip pain my hip walk is much more thrown.
    L1 - S2 "gone" useless in 1 way or another. DDD. RA. Bone Spurs. Tons of nerve damage/issues. Stenosis. Both knees replaced. 50 yrs old. I had a great fall (hence my user name) at age 41 and it has been a domino effect every since.

    I know speaking for myself, when I get close to a flareup, the first thing to happen to me is a hike up my shoulders. Its sort of like a internal way to defend my body. Yet, I know that doing that will just cause problems with my cervical area and the upper back rhomboid muscle.

    Same applies to your legs. When something happens, a flare up, or just a little setback, many people start to limp a bit, as you said listing to one side.

    Its your bodie's way of compensating for another part that is having problems. The trouble is IF that limping, hiking shoulders, listing continues for a while, it will effect some other part of your body.

    Our bodies are Stero and not Mono... So what happens in one spot will surely appear in some form in another area

  • Meesha, a long time ago when I ruptured the L5/S1 disk (before the accident that landed me on the permanent back pain crew), I developed a 30° scoliosis just from the muscle spasms!

    Now I certainly have a "list" as you call it, but I just tell everyone my bottom isn't correctly attached to my top and to get used to it ;)

    Have you tried physical therapy? They could use US, light, heat, ice, and stim to relax the spasms that's probably causing you to "list." :)

  • Thanks, yes I tried ice, and my back is a little better. I've done physio, before this attack, but they've done all they could, which mostly consisted of Mckenzie exercises, which I now do on my own. Except that I can't do anything much after a sneeze attack a week ago, so right now I have to ride it out.
