  • The doc I have is very good, highly recommended ,I believe I should get it done while I'm relatively young,I'm 42,and don't wanna get it at 62,sometime my back pain is really bad and feel I should do something, back in march I could could not walk for 3 days,I couldn't stand to support myself, first time I was ever like that,.thinking it was a warning sign?
  • I would say go for it..Its a tough decison I know, trust me there were days when my back didn't hurt at all then like you there were days when I was stuck in bed for a week. The dr said the samething to me, you are young(37), you will recover easier than when you are 60 and the big thing was "do you want your life back?" Aslo he said look you aren't horrible yet, should make the recovery easier. I am 20 days now and off painkillers during the day for the last 3 days. Trust me it hurts but I couldn't stand the feeling of painkillers and since the pain is tolerable I decided to try it. I think another big plus for me was where my pain before surgery was on and off I wasn't living on painkillers before. You will be fine and I would trust your doctor. Again your recovery is going to be horrible for the first few weeks so please prepare for that(I know my surgery was different but I think any back surgery would be similar). Keep us posted and good luck
  • I am a poster child for failed artificial disc replacement on my l4l5. It caused nerve damage so caused me to have fusion 2 years later on same level leaving the adr in there,

For the last 8 years after seeing many dr,s who say adr is not as good as its made up to be, There are still way too much complications with adr for lower back,

And risk becomes much higher when adr fails becsuse its put in from the front and very high risk to go back in from the front so nobody will go back in to take it out,

Sarah: You mention you had l4l5 fusion with artificial disc replacement? How is that posible? Its either fusion or adr on the level it cant be both, Some people say artificial disc replacement just because they removed the original disc and fused it,
But thats not artificial disc replacement that just simply fusion with disectomy of the natural disc, Is that what you had? Or was adr used at 1 level and fused at the next level?

And which adr was used? I had the fexicore disc which was in 2004 clinical trial,

I only had a leak in my l4l5 disc when this all started and in my case i would of been beter off living with it, altered my life all together and pain now is 24/7 with nerve damage,

If i had to do it all over again i would if anything go with the fusion which they can re do if anything such as screws break or whatever, If adr goes wrong then you are more screwed then you are with a fusion,

Yes i had pain before my surgery. But nowhere near the pain i have now,

Back surgery is serious business and if it dont work out as many here still suffer after surgery and seeing pain specialist for a lifetime without any serious solutions,

Talk to more then 1 dr old and young, some will be honest and will tell you the serious risk involved and some act like its no big deal and jump to do surgery and when it makes things worse they send you away simply saying well you should not have the pain you have because they dont know what else they can do,

Best of luck on whatever you decide, Just always be prepared for the worst just in case, Such as what if it makes things worse, Do you have family to back you up in this as many of us became dissabled after surgery after surgery after another surgery,

Its best if you know you have a wife or other family that can help if things go wrong,

Sorry dont mean to scare ya away from surgery but you have some with good results, some with fare results and some with nightmare results, this is a fact,

  • In case you missed my question, How and why did you have artificial disc and fusion at l4l5? When they do artificial disc its in place of the fusion to keep movement at that level, so why would they do both fusion and adr?

As far as i know its 1 or the other not both unless they are at diferent level such as maybe adr at l4l5 and maybe fusion at l5s1. Or something like that? Did you maybe have 2 levels done?

Just trying to sort this out because as i said above, many confuse removing the old natural disc thinking its artificial disc replacement when its just part of the fusion procedure, Artificial disc replacement is a devise that is replacing the natural disc and is made to work so fusion dont have to be done,

Mine is the flexicore, then you have some with pro disc. Mevrick or something like that is another 1 and many more out there,
