Is this what SI joint problems feel like for you?

The short version of my story is that I'm a runner who used to to insane mileage and spent many years ignoring and underestimating back problems, and they all piled up at once. I'm dealing with stenosis-induced weakness on my left side, and on my right, I've had varying degrees of pain at my SI joint.

Just wanted to get feedback on how others experience SI problems.

The area is painful and tender. It often really feels like it just needs one big chiro CRACK to put it all back into place. Also getting some referred pain down the leg, very similar to sciatica.

The thing that worries me the most is that -- and this is where I don't know if I know what I'm eve talking about! -- that it feels like my whole pelvis is out of alignment. It almost feels like my leg is screwed into its socket crooked, if that makes any sense. And I notice my leg does kick out a little bit when I walk.
HALLLP! What are your experiences? What did you do?


  • What you are experiencing is very similar to what I have dealt with over the past 13 years. I am 30 now, but started running cross country in high school. I was seeing a chiropractor by the time was 17. It has slowly gotten worse over the years and, thanks to a friend, finally insisted on getting an MRI through my HMO.

    My pain is normally in the very lower back, almost at my tail bone. The pain is usually dull and encompasses both hips. That pain will often travel down my right leg into what feels like the bone. The dull pain is consistent and doesn't subside. Then I will get shooting pains down the same leg that feels like an electric shot. Or like a knife in the nerve. It often causes me to yell out or spasm (embarrassing).

    As for the feeling of your pelvis being out of place, I have never experienced that. The only time I had something similar was with my right hip which actually WAS out of place due to my back and knee being messed up.

    Basically, what you are feeling is not good. I do suggest going to the doctor and demanding an MRI. I'm still trying to find a solution that works long term, but I continue to run (training for a half marathon) so it's not always to just stop running for these procedures. Hence my recent post. I had to do several things before any real actions were taken. Yoga, physical therapy, then steroid injections and now the block. I'm sure they'll suggest that for you as well. (I have Kaiser)

    I've got an appointment for an SI block next week. I'm hoping the relief will give me a window of time where I can do PT, chiro, whatever else is necessary to fix or at least minimize the damage.

    You've had the block before? what was your experience?

  • Hey guys im experiencing these problems too! I was involved in a car accident back in 2008 where a car hit the 4x4 i was in side on and the 4x4 flipped onto its side. I suffered back problems and still do up to this day. My main problem is my sacroiliac joint. My physio said my joint had become very loose and she actually thought i may have been pregnant (but i wasnt) I only have the left joint loose. It did heal but it has become loose several times since and i am wondering if it is due to ligament damage. I am now expericencing the worst pain i have had with it du to falling over flat on my back. My leg has pain all the way down i struggle to stand up or get out of bed and my leg often gives way or i loose my balance when standing still or walking. My hips too feel out of line and my left hip now cracks or pops alot. I can also crack the sacroiliac joint when laying on my side. I also struggle to put shoes on my left foot. I have recieved help to stretch the muscles in the past but nothing for ligament damage?

    I need some advice
  • If the therapist feels you suffer signs and symptoms consistent with a dysfunction related to the sacroilaic joint and manual medicine, pelvic stabilization exercises, and sacroiliac joint belt has stabilized the pain but not to a minimal degree consistently then I would consider seeing a pain specialist who can perform a safe diagnostic sacroilaic joint injection under xray guidance using anesthetic only to evaluate for an 80 percent reduction of your left sided symptoms with movements that increase the pain. If this demonstrated then get it repeated again for consistency of results. If positive again then I would recommend cortison into the sacroilaic joint one 1-2 occaisions in conjunction with your rehabilitation program with your therapist. If minimal results are seen at 12 weeks and your suffering and function is impaired I would consult with a surgeon about sacroilaic joint fusion. Hope this helps.

  • my tail bone is fuse itself have disk completly missing,im glad to find you all. im here to support you as well stenoiues ,herneated disk,
    i take tramadol ,gabapentin . for pain its not working well, i also have mylopaTHY ,
    theres more but im intrested in this . tell me how dose it make you feel ,your symtoms im trying to sort out what wrong i have develope thigth pain im supoosed to go to clinic. im also a mess at top of spine , seaver artiries there also. neroropathy, moysistes so as you can seen im confused about what is what .have lost some of my cognative ablitys hugs co ps i have allergy to all nasaids and asprine

  • I had several years where my pelvis was completely unstable; if my PT happened to move me the wrong way, it would literally slide out of place. I ended up having prolotherapy (four or five sessions) in 2007 and 2008, and have never had a problem with instability there since.

    I also have a lot of SI issues, and I know what you mean about it feeling like it needs a good 'crack'!! My pain goes into my butt and sometimes down my leg, but my low back and hips take the brunt of it. I've had four rhizotomies with cortisone injections into the SI joints, and those have helped me immensely for several weeks to several months.

    Are you taking any anti-inflammatories to settle down the swelling, etc? I don't find that they help me a lot, but I've become tolerant to so many medications that it's frustrating to find anything that helps.

    Was it truly SI joint problems you were experiencing, or something else? If it was your SI joint, was it from being too mobile, or not mobile enough?
    The block was a miracle.
    I had a lot of pain right at the joint -- the block cut it all out. And I had been suffering from pain down my leg that I assumed was sciatica, and the block cut the pain by about 90%.

    So, can you give me a little info about your experience with prolotherapy? I've heard a little, both pro and con, but I'd like to hear the story straight from the horse's mouth, so to speak.
