  • My surgery was 2/13/12. I had serious muscle spasms and pain and they had difficulty finding meds to manage them while I was in the hospital. This set me back as far as physical activity was concerned. After 3 days in the hospital I hadn't completed any physical therapy due to the severe muscle spasms. They finally gave me baclofen which has worked great and MS contin for pain along wit oxycodone
I went to a rehab/nursing home after being discharged from the hospital on day 4. I live alone and really wasn't able to manage on my own at that point. I hadn't walked much or done stairs. Even though it was a nursing home and i was the youngest person there by at least 25 years, I had nursing care to help me get my meds managed through fits of nausea. I stopped the MS Contin which was making me ill and suddenly I felt much better. I wear a rigid plastic brace when ambulating. Therapy has been easy with no pain. I'm walking without a walker or cane. I was at the rehab center for 6 days. I'm home now doing great. The only severe pain I have is when I cough. The awful pain I had for years that led me to surgery is gone.

  • Morning all. Just completeted L5 S1 fusion 9 days ago. Night 8 was my first actual sleep....thank god. My history is : day 1....surgery in early am and into recovery until 6 or so, up to room at 7, bad meal then went for a walk with help. Day 2... On percoset 2 every 4 hours so kind of dosy but fealing ok, went for a walk and used the stairs with physio and they thought i was fine to go home. The trip home, 1 1/2 hour car ride was nt fun and that night was in as much pain as i can imagine, now when they ask for pain from 1 to 10 i know what 10 is....didnt really sleep and. Only sitting in a chair. Day 3 i started to gradually feel better...started tapering off perc...was completely off by day 5...now day 9 i am pain med free...nothing...no cane and walked to our corner store yesterday for the first time in years...felt great Wondering what to do now about exercising...thoughts?
  • That's what I've been told. Walking is the best medicine. I also do some aqua therapy at the local gym. Just walking in water feels great. Getting in and out of the pool is tricky some days.

Did your surgeon prescribe Physical Therapy for you? I would suggest starting there.

It's now 3 months now 2 week's after my l5 s1 fusion surgery. My surgeon advised physiotherapy and also steriod injections in the rt buttock muscles where I have nagging pain while sitting or standing.MRI does not show any abnormality. Numbness and pain in my rt legs is resolved by fusion surgery but buttock muscle pain is an issue.I feel that there is injury in my hip muscle as I can walk or sit almost without pain when I keep certain hip muscles pressed by my rt hand.I request the forum members to kindly help because I must start going to my work asap to keep earning my salary.its almost 3 and half months i am off work.Kindly help.
