Severe pain post car accident , have scoliosis/ kyphosis

Hello , please help.. I am 27 years old and Was in a mva January 10 th 2013 (two months ago) hit a cement pole caused by muddy roads from construction company, when I hit the pole I braced the steering wheel and the force of the impact ( strong shock) traveled throw the steering wheel and right into my back , was in shock at the scene and denied going to hospital , since the accident my family doc sent me for X-rays , he noticed I had scoliosis pre X-ray , the report was mild Dorsal scoliotic curvature to the right, and mild upper Dorsal kyphosis. I was never diagnosed with either until now , since the accident my doc prescribed me flexeril ( wacky pills ) which don't help , and naproxen, also did not help,, I've been back to the drs twice with chronic lower back pain and spasms ,he keeps saying its " just whiplash" but I've had whiplash before and this doesn't feel rit plus I've gotten nothing but worse since the accident ,, should he send me for an MRI , EMG or CT scan ?? I Go to chiropractor 4 times a week since the accident and all she does is ultrasound heat, which doesn't do anything , so I guess my main question is , could the scoliosis I've had for all these years somehow be causing me trouble from the initial shock from the impact , because all the pain right now is right at the curve in my spine , will this cause any problem in the future , thank you if you can help me I'd appreciate it

  • First let me say I am NOT a medical doctor, nor do I have any medical training. I would ask to see an orthopedic surgeon ASAP. Some people prefer a neurosurgeon, but I'd start with one or the other, definately want to see a spine specialist (not just a regular ortho doc). If you want to continue the ultrasound heat treatments, I don't imagine that would be a problem, and you might find after you stop them that in fact they were helping (or maybe not). However I would definately refrain from having the chiro adjust you until you now for certain what is occuring with your spine. To answer your questions, mild scoliosis is gernally not painful an is somewhat common. However, everyone is different, and its possible that even someone with mild scoliosis could have tremendous pain due to an underlying nerve issue, or even possible other reasons. The important thing is, if you are experiencing pain that is affecting your life, then you need to adovcate for yourself to find the problem and look for treatment. Mild kyphosis is also not thought to be painful (usually). It is certainly possible that the force of your wreck was made worse simply because of your spinal defmorities, even though originally they are "mild". The surgeon will most likely order an MRI an possibly a CT scan, and will be much better at reading them then your GP anyways (who will only read the radiologist report). Good luck and keep us posted.

Diagnosis for my scoliosis series xray are as follows ... "There is a dorsolumbar scoliosis convex right, measuring 17 degrees , centred at L1 ". I am still experiencing spasms in my low back , family doctor still won't send me for MRI , also should I insist he sends me to a back specialist? Thanks
  • If you are still having pain that is affecting your life 2 months later, I'd ask to see a spine specialist. If you are seeing improvement, then I'd wait to see if it goes away on its own, but if you aren't seeing improvement, I'd ask to see a specialist.

My family doctor has once again denied referral to a spine specialist.. he has instead made a refferal to a pain clinic.. perhaps they will send me for a ct or mri to see whats going on... what exactly does a pain clinic do. ?

  • The pain clinic will help you find out what is causing your pain and help you fight it. If you need an mri, they will get you an mri, if you need injections, they will get you injections. I think your doc made the right choice, you'll get the tests you need done and then hopefully fix the findings.
  • I have no experience with pain management, but I have read lots of negative experiences on here (TOTALLY TO BE EXPECTED because here is where we all come to vent when something goes wrong), but I've also heard tons of success stories and on going positive professional relationships with their pain clinics.
