32-year-old Male After ACDF of C5 - C6

Hello all,
I happened to stumble across this site as I am recovering at home from surgery.

I'm in good health and prior to my sports injuries (combo pool mishap & Mudd Volleyball 1 week apart) I loved to ride my bike, lift weights, run on treadmill, and play the occasional organized sport.

My symptoms were pretty textbook for a C5/C6 injury, including the C6 radiculopathy. I tried two months of chiropractic + PT work without relief so I decided to see a NS. Was able to wait a month for surgery to plan it as best as possible around my personal life and job. Today is 4/17 and I am on post-op day 3, and I was discharged the same afternoon of an early morning surgery. Overall, I'm feeling pretty good, with the help of some pain meds as needed. Unlike several of the columns that I have read, I have not been prescribed a neck brace and I have been told not to lift anything until my first follow-up appointment in about 2 weeks. I've also noticed, to my surprise, that the post-op discharge instructions vary quite a bit between case to case, as I've read many testimonials across the web.

I suppose I come with both questions and offerings. I'm able to help others understand what the surgery itself is like, as well as the immediate postoperative period. I'm a Critical Care nurse by training so I've taken a deeper interest in the bigger picture of the injury and resulting procedure. I'm also open to any advice about things to expect, do, or watch out for as I progress down the path of full recovery.

Thank you all and happy to joining this forum
