Do they do surgery on Disc Protrusions or only on Disc Herniations? Please help, thank you!

I have protrusions at my C5-C6 and C6-C7 causing severe pain in my shoulder, arm pit, fore arm with numbness in my ring and pinky finger, reduculopathy of the C6-C7, per 3 EMG's, as well as a neurogenic bladder. I'm getting a Epideral injection at my C6-C7. This has been going on for almost 1.5 years, having had PT for 1 year of it and it's only getting worse. In can't take NSAIDS due to past bleeding ulcers. Would surgery be next if the shot does not work? Do they even do surgery on disc protrusions or only disc herniations?

They will probably try therapy next. Like traction or Aqua therapy. That's how it was for me. Any disk problem can cause pain. Mine were herniated. Anything touching a nerve will cause pain. I bought a soft cervical collar to wear at home. It made my pain hurt less.

    2006-L4-L5 diskectomy.
    2009-Cervical laminectomy at C3.
    Steroid injections series x 4.
  • That's very helpful! I'm just at a loss with the pain, and after SO much PT I'm surprised it's not helping. Are those , traction or Aqua therapy , different forms of PT? I was actually just online looking for a neck collar, hoping it helps. Do they ever come to a point of surgery if those things don't work? Thank you so much for your help.

  • Traction is a device that adjusts your spine, it actually feels good. During the process you can feel relief. Aqua therapy allows you to move under water with out pain. So I would exercise more because the fluid inside your body floats in the water.

  • I will for sure try those first! Thank you!
