fusion medical alert

having just completed an emergency drill for disaster relief, a scenario occurred where an injured  victim had a spinal injury. unknown to the EMTs was the fact that the victim had hard ware from a 3 level fusion in the cervical spine.  point is that if you have surgical implants and spinal hardware, please get with your doctor and see about some sort of medical id that states the issue,  i have a total fusion of the cervical spine and my id says do not hyperextend the neck intubate nasally. An uninformed EMT might do more harm than good not knowing all the facts,   we tend to wear id tags and bracelets for allergies and heart problems but i find that few folks with spine problems have any way of communicating them if in an accident.   just thought i would thro the thought out there,  take care all and stay safe.  piperbill

  • Thank you for posting this very valuable information, Piperbill!  You are so right--not knowing the status of someone's spine could spell disaster in an emergency situation!!
