Return to work post L5/S1 fusion

Wondering how soon people return to work after L5/S1 fusion? I am 9wks post op & due to return next week, but thinking it might be too soon. I have to stand a lot in my job & even though I only do 4hr shifts, my back currently aches like mad after only half hour of standing. What seems to be the norm? I'm 53 by the way, so I'm no spring chicken!

  • I had L5/S1 fusion surgery two years ago (with titanium implant).  I, too, was in my early 50's at the time. I returned to work after 4 weeks off. I definitely went back too early (for a variety of reasons I didn't have too many options re the timing, I was in the middle of a job-related promotion & transfer).

Hopefully your employer will provide you with reasonable accommodation - not standing or sitting for too long at any one time!

Good luck and and let us know how it goes
