Hi, I'm Natalie here with Veritas Health, and I'm here to give you guys some information on using ice therapy for shoulder pain relief. Ice therapy can be used for a number of different shoulder conditions, such as rotator cuff tendonitis, shoulder arthritis, shoulder bursitis, shoulder impingement, or really any generalized shoulder pain.
Ice therapy can be applied after exercise between physical therapy type exercises, or doing strenuous daily activities that bother your shoulder.
There are several different options you have for a shoulder cold pack. You can use an instant cold pack from your local pharmacy. These can oftentimes be applied directly to the skin if that’s what the label indicates. You can use a gel pad that you can get from your pharmacy as well. These are placed in your freezer until they're cold and then they can be easily contoured to the skin. If you're not wearing any clothes or if you're applying to bare skin, I would definitely use a towel over this as it can be damaging to your skin to be applied directly on there.
You can also use a homemade ice pack, or if you don't have these materials on hand, you can use a bag of frozen peas or frozen vegetables as well. With this, I would also apply over clothes or with a towel so it's not directly on your skin.
When using ice therapy for the shoulder, I'd recommend starting with about ten minutes as it's a smaller joint, but if necessary, you can work your way up to about 20 minutes. Just be mindful of any skin redness, skin irritation, or signs of frostbite that are occurring.
