Hi all I am new here. I am in the XL TDR study and am going in to have my L4L5 replaced on the 17th of march. I have had 5 long years of pain and can't take it any longer. I just wanted to know if anybody here has had this done?
I had the nuvassive XLIF (fusion) 1/19/10. For the TDR what type of replacement do they use?
Good luck, Jim

Please keep us posted. This looks like the 2nd generation of ADR. It's ball/socket like a small version of a hip replacement hardware. Same concept. Looks like the metal plates have gripper feet on them to grab the bone. I assume to hold in place and they should not slip.
I had this surgery on 3/17/10 and was up and walking in 3 hours after surgery. I feel pretty good and got a full 8 hours of sleep last night for the first time in a year and a half I could sleep on my back. Well this is day 1 after surgery so I hope it keeps getting better from here. I will keep you posted.
2 days after surgery and I still feel pretty good. I got a good night sleep for the 2nd night in a row. I can't wait for the surgery wounds to recover so I can see if the XL TDR device is going to help me.
well day 5 is here and I feel good, other than the pain from surgery itself. I am able to put my shoes and socks on all by myself PAIN FREE!!!!! Ah the little things in life that make you happy. I am looking forward to getting back to everyday life without all the pain.
the best I have felt in years!!!!! I hope that it keeps going the same! I can't even think what it is going to be like it I keep getting better everyday. I guess I had been in so bad shape that I feel really good other than pain from the surgery.
You seem to be doing extremely well. I'm happy for you. You, I, and Graham have all had different, but close to the same surgeries. So please keep posting. I had the fusion with BMP and there was fusion growth at 8 wks. I don't think mine went quite as smooth as your. But I've had other fusions. And nothing seems to compare with this. If you have little setbacks, don't let it freak you out. It is to be expected.
Good luck, Jim

I am so happy(so far)! This is the best I have been in years. I feel stronger every day and am down to 1 pain pill a day(7.5 vic).I have very little pain from the surgery. I go back to the Dr. on thursday to have the staples taken out. I hope I can go back to work(lite duty) next week.
Thanks, I think. I am just posting my results of a new product that has worked for me(so far) and is changing my life(so far). So if the your my hero coment is sarcasm just keep it to yourself please.
Well its not sarcasm. I had a discectomy and was barely able to return to work three months later. I still feel terrible. Im glad too see someone have a successful recovery.
Is this the procedure where they go in from your side? I hope this type of fix to back problems catches on more it just seems like a lot more natural approach than the typical fusion.
yes they go in from the side. Sorry if I sounded like a jerk. I am doing really good and am 100% better than I was before surgery and want to tell as many people about this that I can.
I should have used better wording but no kidding you make me feel like there is hope for a normal life. My back is going to need an "overhaul" sooner or later unless a miracle happens. Seeing that you feel good so soon I just great. Hey im going to send you a PM.
Can't pm you for some reason. I am 37. I was at a point that I could not get my shoes and socks on, get out of bed, sleep,or bend over. I was getting about 3-4 hours of sleep. Now it is a different world for me. I had the surgery on 3-17-2010 in Medford oregon by EDITED. The best move I have ever made!!!! I heard a add on the radio for a investigational study(and figured I had nothing to lose) for back pain. The study is for DDD, mine was L4-L5. I had to jump through some hoops but was accepted into the study so it does not cost me any $$$ here is a link http://www.nuvasive.com/xlmotion/conditions_treatments.html
Its been 3 plus weeks since surgery and I feel great! I went out today and pitched batting practice to my 3 boys. I am a High school baseball coach. I was also able to hit them ground balls. I can feel it but still feel very good. I have been doing more and more everyday and am still getting stronger everyday. It still just blows my mind that I feel this good so soon after surgery. It is just a pure blessing that this has worked for me(so far) and is giving me my life back(so far). I know that I am going to have a set back but it has been great for me so far!
well its 4/20/2010 and I had surgery on 3/17/2010 and am feeling great. I have been getting stronger everyday. I played softball on a team that would play around 150 games each year and was able to go out sunday and take batting practice for the first time since surgery. I am in a little pain from batting practice but am doing very good. I have been doing lite yard and house work and am doing well. The only setback I have had was practicing early last week with My high school baseball team (jv coach). I had to field some balls and had to move quickly and was in pain that night but was good the next day. I go to the Dr. this friday. I will keep posting.
Ken
P.S. I have had such good results with the Nuvasive XL TDR that I would like anyone with DDD to at least look it up on the net!
well its 5/6/2010 and I go back to work on the 10th. I am ready to go back but have kinda hit the wall as far as recovery goes. I still feel realy good doing day to day things but I have been doing more work type duties and am in more pain that night and the next day. It seems the more I do the worse I feel but all my day to day things(lite housework and personal care) are fine. I guess that its just that I'm not that far out of surgery and my body has not recovered from the surgery 100% yet. If this is as good as it gets I am 100% ok with my choice to have the surgery.
I think we all do Ken. There is that initial recovery at home. Then basic walking. Then some PT. More walking. Some exercise besides walking. Start some basic chores. Seems to be all good.
Then you go back to work full time and try to do others things in the evening and on weekends. You find it is a really big step from where you were. Doesn't seem like it until you land in it. My back hurts from sitting all day. No matter how much I get up and stretch. Add in doing chores on the weekend and it is just tiring and makes me sore. I'm 6 months out.
My PT and my doc are telling me I'm just getting to where I was before surgery. Now I have to get to where I want and need to be. At least another 6 months of exercise and slowly ramping up. It's rough but it beats the alternatives...
6/8/10 almost 3 months since surgery(3/17/10) Still going very good. I have been back to work for about a month now and am doing very good. I have started riding my bike to work, about 4 miles, and the only thing that hurts is my butt(bike seats suck). I go in on friday for my 3 month check-up. I hope that the Dr. will give the ok to start running so I can go back to playing softball. I have been out taking batting practice and have not had any problems.
all I have to say is wow! I am doing great and am back to all the things that I did before I hurt my back. I just got home from a softball tourny, all the hitting, fielding balls, and running the bases and I feel good for a soon to be 38 year old fat guy. I played 2 games sat and 4 on sun and feel good!
just a quick update, I am still doing great. I have played 2 softball tournaments in the last 3 weeks(18 games total with league) and spent 6 days at the Oregon dunes riding my quad with the wife and kids. I still am doing very good and have been pain free for about 6-8 weeks. I think this surgery is going to change many lives as it has mine. This is one of the best things to ever happen to me. I never thought I would feel this good again and have my life back.
just an update...... I had the nuvasive xlt-dr surgery on 3/17/2010 on my L4/L5. I can't tell all you enough if you are single stage DDD to look into this! This was the Best decision I have made in a very long time!!!! I am feeling better than I have in the last 10 years. I am back to doing all(softball, atv riding, and stuff around the house)the things that I had given up on doing. I feel very lucky to have my life back!
well I will say that I have always been a power hitter and did take just a bit to get back to hitting the "long ball". I am getting back to my old self. I did have 4 hits in 5 at bats this last monday, our 1st game of the holiday league. I can't stress enough that you need to look into the XL TDR it has been great for me. feel free to e-mail me with any ???'s you have.
I am new to this, but I just got my study packet today. My doctor thinks that I would benefit from this TDR. It looks pretty good to me, but I was told the qualifications are tough. Could anyone tell me about how long it was from the time you got your consent form to the time you had your surgery?
-Rene'
Rene, I had mine 2 weeks after I was accepted. you only have so many days after you get the ok. I will tell you that when you go in and do the paperwork be sure to answer all the ????'s as if it was your "VERY WORST DAY" or you may not get in the study. When I did my paperwork, they first came back in the room and said that I did not score high enough to get in. I went back and answered all the ???'s as if it was my very worst day and they added(you have to score so high) it all up and I got in. My pain was very bad and I had got used to the pain and had been dealing with it for so long. If you have any ????'s feel free to e-mail me @kgarrison3@yahoo.com. I am 8 months(3/17/2010) out of surgery and am pain free and back to all the stuff(softball, atv riding)that I did before the pain got bad.
So I go in on Friday to see if I qualify for this procedure and to review my disography. Hopefully that test didn't foul up my chances at getting into the program. I am a little nervous about it because that test is so interpretive. I will keep you posted on what happens. Hey Daniel...I also live in Medford too!!! You must be one of Mark Peterson's patients too.
Did you get the procdure done? Mine is scheduled in 3 weeks. I did create a group on Facebook called XL TDR... please feel free to add any comments and pass this information on......

Help!
I had mine(L4-L5) done 3/17/2010. I have very little pain. The only thing I still have pain with is when I stand in 1 spot and it's more of a pressure than a pain. Everybody I have talked to is doing much better than before the surgery. What type and where is your pain? Do you have less pain now after surgery?
Just a little update. Surgery was on 3/17/2010 so now it has been 11 months and I am still doing great. The only problem I am having is when I stand in 1 place for to long, I get a really good pressure/pain in my back. As long as I am moving, I am good to go!
...seems you're the only one from this study reporting in. It's supposed to use a control group of 300. The Clinical Trials are still ongoing and they have published no data. They are also still looking for more volunteers for the study.
1 year to the day and I have been given my life back!!! I am doing very good. The only problem I am still having is when I stand still, I get a good pressure/pain in my lower back. When I am moving I am good to go. I had mine done in Medford Oregon. I am 1 of 13 to have it done in Medford. I have talked to a couple of the others and they are doing better after surgery than before but don't seem to be doing as good as me. I have not taken anything for pain since about week 6-8. I seem to have had a "perfect" surgery and recovery. I think this is going to be something that is going to make life for people better but not purfect. I am not sure if mine went so good or if I was just worse off than I thought. I have come to the conclusion that I have a very high tolerance for pain. I did not take anything for pain before surgery until about the last 10-12 months. I did not and still don't like to take pain meds. I do have small pains every day all over, I just think that these are from being a soon to be 39 year old fat guy! haha
In conclusion, I would still tell everybody that is in the same situation as I was to look into this surgery very hard. It has changed my life for the better!

it is a ball/socket joint. If it does not work they can pull it out and fuse whats left of the disk.
Thanks Ken
