Spondylolisthesis/DDD/Herniated disc/ & pars fracture

Hiya, wasnt sure where to post this but i was wondering if anyone could me me any help/tips or advice.Same as most its a long story but i have recenly been diagnosed with Spondylolisthesis/DDD/Herniated disc/ & pars fracture. I have tried all the conservative treatments ie physically threapy, nsaid, nerve pain tablets, pain killer, exercise etc. most recently i went to theater for epidural spinal injection via live x-ray (floroscopy I think its called) with the cortizone they also injected some anaestict into the direct place in the spine. since that though the pain has became much worse. then it eased a little. but where I previously had a numb leg/foot etc I now have pain. the spasams have eased ever so slightly & I do have a very small amount of extra flexability in my movement as was very stiff before. But the pain just feels worse & im still unable to function properly & every day is agony at best !! I just seem to be getting worse & worse. The surgeon did seem to think even though he was giving me the epidural shot I would still need surgery to fuse & stabilize the verabrea from further movement. I have one more mri booked & back to see consultant in few weeks where he will decided what to do. I am worried & scared. There are so many different stories about surgery working & not working. I would appreciate any help, advice, or even just a chat with fellow suffer's. before this I was a very fit active mother of 3 !!.......I just want my life back Thanks for reading xx

Hiya back Ash, you don't

Hiya back Ash, you don't mention stenosis in your DX but if you have the above mentioned issues then quite possible you have some stenosis going on as well.
Majority of what you have going on, I have as well, and you can thank most if not all to the last thing you mentioned, the pars defect. I haven't had surgery as of yet, and like you I'm researching and weighing my options of when I can't take it anymore. I have changed my lifestyle now in the last 9 months since it has really flared up. The things I would enjoy doing, I don't dare do anymore, my main focus at this current day is to maintain the pain level that I have, so I can at least draw a paycheck.

My personal life is way too chaotic currently to have a spine fusion which is what has been told to me the fix, like yourself. You don't mention what level your defect is at, but I'm guessing l4 or l5, that's most typical for pars defects. If you haven't allready been educated on the matter, I will say this, until you are ready to have surgery, keep up with stretches, and core PT. However, you need to maintain a "Flatback" approach, so when you been down or whatever, keep that low back straight and flat, otherwise it stretches or microtears more of the pars scar/bone/soft tissue injury.

I want my life back too, and I go back and forth as to my thoughts on a fusion, but, until I can't take this anymore, I will continue to research and ask questions. Hopefully you have a very good relationship with your surgeon, as this will have a great impact on the results you might get from the surgery.

hi

thanks was lovely to read about someone in a very similar situation with very similar problems. Sometimes just nice to know im not alone. It woul be far easier to just have one bad thing that could just be fixed !! itd the frustration of having the disc disease, the Spondylolisthesis, the fractures & the disc herniation.
I have had a recent admission to hospitaland not ong come out. I went in as the pain was totally unbearable. the problem i have now is mu surgeon cant do anything surgery wise as im curently on pain relief higher than that of someone post op, so if an op was done they would have no way controling my pain. while in hospital the did take me back down to theatre for a small op & put some steriod directly into my spine it was very differnt to having the full cortizone down the leg. ( and less painfull than that)
Im now back hoe rattling with med but still experiencing some pain. they have also found added to my probs they have found another disc higher up has a tear & they think it may be leaking fluid ontom my nerves etc. awiting further investgations into that one !! i go back in 3 weeks to see surgeon again. yeas i forgot to say the slipped vertabre is my L4\L5 region. think this is most common.
Im now at home waiting on crutches feeling totally ed up ..again. while in hospital the surgeon did say there are a few surgery options opening either from back or front ??? but thats all he said he did say they is also a couple of non surgigal options but when iasked wht they were he wouldnt even tell me, he just said we need to concentrate on controlling the pain !! but considering the amount of meds im on i dont know how im supposed to do that !! but suppose they know best and at least i can research the tear aswell now Smile xx thanks again for yor reply
