Hi my name is Tony from Perth Western Australia.
I had a hartshill spinal fusion in 1988 on L5/S1. Great result for 18 yrs.
Oct 06 starting getting lower back pain in my SI area.
Have had Cat scans, bone scans, x rays, MRI's x 2. All showing up with no problems. Exiting bone graft fine, no issues with L4/L5 disc.
Only relief is from cortisone injections, bi laterally into my sacroiliac joints. Last about two weeks - takes away the pain and I begin to feel normal.
Can't exercise at all, can't drive my car (automatic), no standing or walking very far. If I walk to far the pain returns in full force. At 51 have turned into an 80 man.
Now my back specialist doctor wants to remove the metal and wire in the hartshill rectange fuson. To see if the fixs the problem.
Has anyone had this done?
Regards Tony

  • Hi, I has a fusion from L4 to S1 in 1990 with a Hartshill rectangle. I was never really free from pain, my back became worse and in 2004 the Hartshill rectangle had to be removed because it had corroded and four of the wires had broken. I still have pain and cannot do much walking or stand for long periods.
    I am being referred
to the hospital again this month, hopefully they will help, have tried physio but that makes me worse, I was 37 when I had my first operation.
