Anyone have a myelogram?

I'm just wondering if any of you have had a myelogram and if so what was it like? Did it cause you any problems? Headaches? I'm having one 1/20 and I'm kind of nervous about it. I'd just like to hear from others that have had one. Debbie

  • and I was very nervous at the time. I just really didn't think I could take 'another needle' and almost made myself sick over it. When I got there for the procedure, I begged the technician/doctor (can't remember) for some sedation, but my neurosurgeon did not believe in it and would not allow it. This guy was amazing, though, and sat down, talked with me for what seemed like forever, calmed me down, told me step by step what was going to happen.

I won't say I had the most fun ever, but because of his support and compassion, it went OK. I did not have a headache afterward, but I was very very careful to do just what they told me to do. I was told that some people feel so good afterward that they do get up and do things they are told not to do (like go back to work!) and then get headaches.

Hopefully you will have a gentle technician. I recommend being honest if you are nervous and do your best during the procedure to relax and breathe calmly. My CT Myelogram gave my doctor just the info he needed to know for my 3rd (final and successful) surgery.

    Take care,

  • Mine was not bad at all. I got so worked up over it and expected the worse and it was very easy. Have you ever had an epidural? It is similar to that. With the cervical myelogram they do tilt the table down so the dye goes into the cervical area but there was a tech at my head talking to me the entire time and we actually laughed. Let me give you some good pointers, drink plenty of water before the myelogram, drink all you can. I had 4 bottles of water before mine and I drank plenty after the myelogram and did not get a headache at all. I did just like they told me and went home and did not lay down. Good luck, you will be fine.

I'm glad you had a gentle tech. Maybe I will to. I'm glad that you've got your pain under control. I looked up the SCS that you've got. Thats great isn't it? It's amazing really. I hope you continue to get relief. Thanks for your reply. I appreciate it.
    Have a good day

I did have an epidural...almost eighteen yrs ago. But I had already been in labor for 15 hrs. so a puny little needle wasn't gonna bother me! Thanks for the pointers. I will drink as much as I can afterwards. I'm not supposed to drink anything after midnight the night before. I hope that I can do as well as you did. I have such terrible headaches anyway that's why I worry about having even worse ones you know? Take care
