I am a mother of a 13 year old level 7 gymnast. She started having back pain to where she couldn't do gymnastics 4 months ago. We have been to 3 orthopedics, 2 chiropractors, 2 physical therapists, and 2 pain management doctors. We have had an MRI, x-rays, CT Scan, and Nuclear bone scan to rule out any fracture, spondylosis, disc issues, degenerative disc disease, infection, and anything else you can think of....everything comes back clean. We are now doing physical therapy 2 hours at a time, 2 days per week. We most recently had facet injections which did nothing. Today they did 2 trigger point injections which we are waiting to see if they work. We have also been getting taped with kinesio tape. I am trying everything. She hasn't done anything major at the gym except try to do some bar work recently because it is the event that hurts the least. At this point, as much as I would love to see my daughter back doing the sport that she loves and is so talented at, I just want to make her better. If she stands or sits to long she says the muscles running down the sides of her spiner ache badly...when she does gymnastics, it's more in the middle. Please help...it's been such a long road. When we talk about stopping the sport, she just isn't there yet mentally. Has anyone ever had this issue and not been able to find anything wrong?

  • and no. There are lots of issues of the spine that will not show with traditional imaging and require other testing to diagnose. For instance, I had an annular tare that was only diagnosed with the use of a discogram. Also, I have arthritis of my facet joints that causes horrific pain. The arthritis did show with imaging but it took several different injections to diagnose the fact that the facet joints are causing a good deal of my pain. It sounds like her docs are using the correct process of elimination with the injections that they are trying. I wish your daughter much luck in getting a diagnosis and some relief very soon. Please keep us posted.
BTW- Please take a look at the New Member Introductions. There is a mom of a 15 year old tennis player going through much the same as you are right now. You may be great comfort to each other and be able to exchange info.
  • You met me in chat (Erica). I was thinkin about your post, and about your daughter today and thought of a few things. Would like to chat with you about it though just to ask a few things abour her symptoms. Im in chat alot so you should see me if you log on soon. Or, you can PM me (email me through here from my profile). You say she says it hurts on her spine, not the muscles...does it hurt anywhere else? You said low back pain..how low. Stuff like that I would rather chat with you about because it would just go faster. Anyways Im thinkin about you and your girl, in my prayers hope to talk with you soon. Actually I will send you a PM so its easier for you to reply :)
  • I went through 2 years of every test, treatment and conservative steps I could take. Went to many Drs and orthos, nueros, pain specialists and finally to a spine clinic. I had a discogram which showed a annular tear in one disc and tears in other two, something to fall back on if all else fails. Keep trying. She is to young to suffer to long with this.
