Help with Sciatica Pain

dorset boyddorset boy Posts: 148
Has anyone got an good ideas on how to try & relieve sciatica pain?? I have it in both legs right down to the feet where it feels like it is spreading from the centre of the feet to the outer edges. I also have several numb patches to the back of my right thigh which are worrying me - any ideas?. I also have drop foot & outer foot nerve damage, from my last surgery, on my left side. Some days are bette than others!

I will write it up in my signature but I have previously had a lamenectomy L4-L5 (July 2004)then a 2 level fusion with rods screws & cages, third level with dynamic stabalisation (December 2006) (L3-4 L4-5 L5-S1).
I have current undiagnosed back pain which is mainly centre based but does move to left & right & move into the hips. I take MST Morphine 3 x30mg , & 20mg of oramorph daily & 8 x co-codamol 30/500's daily

I am due to go into hospital on the 17th march 09 for a second set of facet joint & ganglian nerve root injections - but these only last 5-7 weeks top end & i'm still never totaly pain free.

last time I spoke to anyone about my pain was when they did the last set of injections at the very start of July last year.

When I was still under the spinal team at my district hospital if I was having a bad time i could call one of the specialised nurse practitioners & had them on speed dial on my phone & even had their pager numbers, now being "pain clinic" nothing!!!!! only my doctors secretary who seems to take delight in telling me how long a list he has & how long I will have to wait for treatment as they are doing things in order of when people were listed rather than prioritising them due to need!!!! (old bag!) mind you I did throw a major tantrum last week & got things moving a little which was a minor acheivement but I felt better LOL! Sorry rambling again - having a bad pain day & another 1 1/2 hrs before knock off time!

  • I unfortunately don't have a cure for sciatica, but if you find anyone that does...please TELL me lol. I'm 12 months on from a ALIF of L5-S1 after 2 Discectomies failed to fix me. I had foot drop which was caused by a fragment of disc and cartiledge tore off and pinned my sciatic nerve. It has since resloved to some degree but I still have nerve damage in my foot. I'm heading back to the operating theatre soon to have a large decompression (removal of bone) to try and relieve the pressure on the nerves, so hopefully that will work.
I've had those steroid injections too. but they were more of a diagnostic tool and unfortunately only gave me a week of comfort, before the pain came back with a vengence.
I've forgotten what its like to be pain free, but I'd love to try it again, sooner rather than later.
My problems have stemed from enjoying horses lol and lugging 40kg chaff sacks around. Oh well....live and learn lol.
I hope you find relief soon from your pain, the drugs just make you lethargic and depressed I think. I'd like to be more active and LIVE life instead of wishing for night time to come so I can take my Endone and Dothep for the pain and snatch a couple hours of sleep. At 43, I still have lots to do @)
  • I have an infrared platinum heating pad that feels good on the back and also wraps around the legs for sciatic pain. I'm on amitriptyline for nerve pain as well as lyrica 600 mg day. When you get the facet joint injections are they just lidocaine or have they tried steroids? I have to go tomorrow and he'll probably inject steroids? But still not sure. I had facet joint injections last Dec.6. Take care and I hope you get some relief of sciatica. it's really awful. I need serax 30 mg to help me sleep and escape that for 8 hours or so. Charry
DDD of lumbar spine with sciatica to left hip,leg and foot. L4-L5 posterior disc bulge with prominent facets, L5-S1 prominent facets with a posterior osteocartilaginous bar. Mild bilateral foraminal narrowing c-spine c4-c7 RN
  • I worked in stables when in my late teens & early 20's, rode at least 5 hrs a day 6 days a week! had my own team of 6 horses to look after, we did everything from riding school for novices to taking out clients hunting!! Then went on to snow & water skiing & fractured a vertibrae in the top of my spine learning to knee board back in the early 1990's which healed eventually. I try heat via hot water bottles, thought someone out there might have some exercises or tips that might give a bit of relief!! Like you I still have loads I want to do & I turn 40 later this year!! Anything is worth a try!!
  • yes its steriods & pain killers they put in, I know they are rather hit & miss pain releif wise but even a couple of weeks is better than nothing!!!! I take "ami" at nights to let me sleep, can't take it during the day as I am still working 6 days a week - have to, no choice as I run my own business - which is alo heading down the pan but should pick up soon (estate agent.
    Thanks for your reply DB.
