My 4 week follow up from 2nd microdiscectomy

I went to see my neurosurgeon for my follow up today. I think I am doing very good to have had two microD's since Jan. Still have some tenderness over the nerve in the right calf, heel and lateral side of my foot. I very seldom need to take a pain pill. My neurosurgeon has been very strict about activities after surgery. I was not supposed to go anywhere in the car for the first 4 weeks and only short walks around the house and limited sitting for meals only. I thought he would talk to me today about when I could go back to work. When I asked him about going back all he would say is "We will talk about that in 3 weeks". He did say that I can drive short distances (yay!) and increase my walking and sitting for longer periods. I am disappointed because I am reading about people who go back to work in 3 or 4 weeks. Have any of you had a doctor who had such strict post op restrictions?

  • First, congratulations that you are doing fabulous!!!

My doctor did not restrict me from riding in a vehicle. Today I rode on a bus, and will not do that again. It was way too bumpy. I can sit 30-45 min., but PT said I should only sit for 15-20min.

The only thing that is really strict is that I can't go back to work for another 4-6 weeks. My pay will be affected. I wonder if he will cut it down to 4 weeks if I am doing well.

BTW...this is my 2nd MicroD. I was wondering how you were doing.
  • I'm sure your Surgeon is taking precautions especially for you as each case should be unique to everyone. I'm glad to see you progressing well after having 2 surgeries in a short time. Do take it slow and no rushing back to work. Take care. Charry
