Back pain

I have 3 bulging discs, (at least seen on last MRI a year ago) which are possibly hurniated by now. I work in a physical labor field for my job. Been to pysical therapy/taction/pain management (denied to give me epidural shot) says they work last for my pain, since i am phsical at work.

I have been on Oxy20 twice a day with 5mg vicodin for b/t up until a month ago. I told my doc that they were not working as well, as i am building a tolerance so he increased both, 40 Oxy, and 10Vic. He referred me to see an ortho surgeron, however I do not want surgery.. until its my last resort.

How do I tell him at my next office visit next month that I dont want the surgery? And as well, I think i am immune to the B/t Vicodin.. they dont do anything. Should I ask for 40-oxy 3 times a day and no b/t, or something diff. for b/t. As the Oxy only last for about 6 hours or so...then its pain-especailly on a work day.

  • It is your body, your choice. I am 6 days post op and am doing great and have not regretted having surgery

  • You might want to see an orthopedic spinal specialist even though you do not want surgery. These doctors, as well as neurosurgeons, recommend surgery as a last resort, and will always try conservative treatments first, if at all possible.

    This way you will have an established relationship with a spinal specialist if the time ever comes when you do need surgery, or, god forbid, you need surgery on an emergency basis. Also, you will be receiving the most accurate diagnosis of your problems. There may be some simple procedure that could help you out.

    I wasn't quite sure from rereading your post. If your next appointment is with the ortho surgeon that you have been referred to, first, be sure he is a spinal specialist and not just a general orthopedic surgeon. Then, just tell him that you would only consider surgery as a last resort and are interested in what else he can do for you. Explain your pain to him and tell him about your progression with the pain meds and how they are no longer helping.

    Good luck. I hope you will be able to find something that will help you out. It may be that you will have to consider a different line of work down the road.
  • be honest with your doctor regarding drugs .i was going through a months supply of oxycontin within 15 days ! so i plucked up the courage to see him and told him that i was taking more than i was written up for and after a very good consultation we came to a agreeable does that i have now been on for the last 15 months and not had the need to increase .i was worried that he may have seen me as a drug seeker but because of the nature of my disease and all the medical evidence to support the fact that i am permanent in pain and wont get better {his words } there was no problem increasing my drugs .only you know whether you need the drugs for pain or you have a problem with them .i would agree with you that the 12 hours oxycontin only last about 6/8 hours and the medical world is aware of this and most good doctors will give you oxynorm for brake through he will most probable start you on 5/10 mg 3/4 time a day and you should find that that will help you .intractable pain is a trail and error kinda of thing what suits some wont suit others .i am a big lad and metabolize drugs very fast .but others will require less than me .and some more so be open with your doctor and you will be surprised how nice and understanding they can be .the last thing they want is for you to be in pain and have to call out the emergency services {as i have done 2 times!}
    good luck
