Epidurals & medial branch blocks

Anyone tried the medial branch blocks. I saw a new pm doc & he feels that I could probably benefit from a combination of 3 epidurals then a series of medial branch blocks. If the first two medial blocks are positive for pain relief he would then do a radiofrequency to burns the nerves. He said those last about a year or so. He also said I could skip all injections & do the scs trial right away. I decided to do the injections & see what happens? I am not sure if I even want the scs? I am worried about the uncomfort & possible side effects & complications from it. I have my first epidural from him today at 2:24pm. Will see how things go. Wish me luck.

  • I really hope you get some relief from todays appt.

    Good Luck :)))

It's good that you are iffy on the SCS IMO.That is a big decision from all I have read and heard, nothing to be taken lighly.I don't have one,and have not even run the trial..but from all the info I have gathered,I think you are wise to think about it and understand that there are no easy answers. It seems as if you are well aware of that too-and I'm always encouraged when people seem to understand that.

I get frustrated whenever I hear people expecting 100% positive outcomes from any procedure/s,so whenever I read a post like yours-with the hope for some relief,I know that you get it and are realistic about your expectations.I suppose that's how you can tell the difference between a long time CP patient, and someone new to the possibilities.

In a way though..the new CP patients hopes are so wide open, maybe I'm just a little jealous of their wide eyed faith, hopes and dreams.. 8>
  • I've had medial branch blocks on boths sides on several levels. They are one of the most difficult shots and very painful. Neither of them worked for me. I'd much rather have an epidural shot any day. I don't know if I'd be comfortable with a SCS. That would have to be my ultimate last option.
