Hi friends,

I had a sudden horrific sharp pain through my upper back that went through my chest last Tuesday at 5:30am. I felt like I was having a heart attack that I had to call 911, cause I could not move the pain was so over whelming, and I could not breath. The ambulance came and picked me up and took me to the Hospital they took blood tests and found my Pancreas was inflamed and that it may have been the cause. Then they had a GI doctor come in and run a test and low and behold my stomach lining was bleeding it was like, gee what in the heck is all this going on with me! Then the doctor thought, I am going to do an MRI test on her and see just by chance if her T4 is out in her mid spine, it is hardly likely it would be, but we will do the MRI anyway. Well low and behold my T 4 was out and he said, it was protruding my lung. I was like what in the world! What does that mean? He said, if I rested for a few weeks it should stay in place and heal.I had never ever heard of that before in my life, nor do I ever want to experience that kind pain again. just got out of the Hospital last Friday night.

I could not make much sense out of this doctor and I asked him a million questions. I felt I was not getting them answered.

Can someone Please explain to me what is a T4 I am looking some of it up and can it really heal itself? What are the chances this will ever happen again? Also how can it protrude in the lung? Should I see a specialist on this? I feel like I am shot in the back everyday and it goes through my chest. The doctor did the test by chance cause he said this does not happen much.

Well since being home from the Hospital my lower back every time I lay down kills me it hurts so much. I so not understand now why that is flared up. I am awake most of the night trying to move and stop the pain some how.

Any insight would be great.

  • "T4" refers to your fourth thoracic vertebrae. So I guess he is saying some part of the bone is protuding into the lung. Yes, you bones can heal. Its not uncommon for people who "break their back" - literally break one of the vertebrae (as long as their is no spine issue), not to be treated surgically but just put in a hard brace to immobilize the chest. The bones can heal themselves.

Did you already have some type of back surgery? The T4 is pretty high up in the chest and wouldn't explain low back pain.
  • I understand the diagnosis. What did they do about the stomach bleed? And what did they do for your pancreas? It sounds like so many different things to happen all at once! A bleeding ulcer, a possibly infected pancreas, and a back bone infringing on your lung! Did the hospital refer you to anyone else or did they make an appointment for you to see the Dr. who attended you?
What were the instructions they sent home with you? Maybe you can go to your primary care doctor and get some answers that way. I'm sorry you're in such pain...I don't understand what's going on with your lower back.
  • I went and saw my primary Doctor on Tuesday. She told my the disc in the middle of my back herniated and the T4 hit my lunge. As for the Pancreas the levels went back to normal while in the Hospital. The bleeding in the tummy was from to much Ibpro. When i was released they just told me to go to my primary. They are trying to get me into a Nero surgeon as mine retired last month. We have only one surgeon left in our city, so the wait is several months long.

I have had two back surgeries and three neck surgeries and three foot surgeries.I am so suffering from all the neck surgeries as well.

My lower back is in so much pain when I lay down that I am up all night now off and on.

  • I understand about the ulcer. I had to go via ambulance last October for the same thing only in my case it was aspirin! I felt so foolish, but pain makes us do foolish things. Okay, so now you're dealing with your T-4. Is it the disc or the bone which is poking your lung? If you have a disc herniation its possible that the gel leaked from the disc has calcified and could cut your pleura (the lining around your lung). I am so sorry....I had no idea you had already had so many surgeries. Lying around in horrid pain is no way to live. Can you get to an N.S. somewhere else? My thoughts are with you.
  • Hi Nancy,

The wait is equally as long. I so want to move out of California as the health care here is not good. Doctors are moving to other places where they actually get more money believe it or not. All the Nero's surgeons where I live all moved away to make more money that is why we only have one, and believe me our city is pretty good size. They all moved around the time my surgeon retired which was just in April. We had about six nero's. Scary if you ask me.

I have been wanting to move to Oregon. So we will see what happens.

I hate dealing with pain, but I try to live life to fullest no matter what.

    Thanks again Nancy.

  • Are there any spine surgeons in your town? A teaching hospital close by? I understand about these guys mving away, Calif. has a system of taxation which has become onerous. I'm from SoCal and my family is still there...trying to get away! I'm glad to see that you're keeping your optimism alive and your great attitude. I'm wondering how much ibu you were taking. I still take 200-400mg per day and I do NOT want another bleed!
