ACDF return to work

Returned to work 11 days after a two level ACDF. I put in 9 hours and I'm ready to go again this morning. I'm fortunate to have the flexibility to work from home at my "desk jockey" job, so my experience may not necessarily translate to those out there with different working environments.

Must say it was a tough day....had to take frequent breaks, and I spent more time in my collar than I had in recent days. I'm taking Tylenol only, which honestly doesn't do much for the residual pain and soreness. Didn't sleep well last night, but that's really no different than any night since surgery...it's been a challenge to get a good night's sleep.

I'll post in a few days with my 2 week progress update...

  • Good to hear all is going well. Today I'm 7 post post ACDF C5/C6 C6/C7 Things are going well. I'm still having some issues swallowing. Things tend to get hung up. I stopped my OXY on Friday after Surgery. I take a few tylenol here and there. One big issue is sleeping in this hard collar. Did you have donar bone put in or what? I did. My doc is making me wear my hard collar 24/7 for 4- 6 weeks I have to sleep in it as well. Only get to take it off long enough to shower
  • I had donor bone with a titanium plate and screws...I was given a soft collar, which I was supposed to wear either 24/7 or for "comfort", depending on who I talked to pre and post op. I was out of the collar for short periods of time the morning after surgery.

I've been sleeping every night in the collar, but the last few nights I've taken it off halfway through the night. Since returning to work I've found the collar to help with supporting my head, and it also serves as a reminder to not make sudden movements.

Interesting that everyone's experience with the collar can be different for similar surgeries...Seems to depend on the opinion and experience of the surgeon.

    good luck with the recovery....
